Every day of the year Washington Bikes is working statewide to ensure better bicycling for you. On Tuesday, May 5 be a champion and Give Big to help Washington Bikes grow bicycling statewide.
It’s been a great 12 months at Washington Bikes to make better bicycling connections for you.
Since May 2014 here are some of the things Washington Bikes has been a part of to grow bicycling statewide:
- Bicycle safety for Washington’s children. Since 2010 over 56,000 children in more than 40 school districts statewide can bicycle safer because of Washington Bikes’ Safe Routes to School education program.
- Establishing the state’s first U.S. Bicycle Route from Anacortes to Newport. In May 2014 US Bicycle Route 10 ( the State Route 20 corridor) was established. It’s the first Bicycle Route to the West Coast and it connects travelers and tourists from around the nation and world to Washington state. At our November Gala & Auction, WSDOT Secretary Lynn Peterson announced the establishment of a Scenic Bikeway Program to grow bicycle routes across the state.
- Governor’s Task Force on Outdoor Recreation and Parks. Washington Bikes Executive Director Barb Chamberlain served as co-chair to Governor Inslee’s Task Force to grow outdoor recreation in Washington state. One of the exciting outcomes of the work included a study showing bicycle riders spend $3.1 billion statewide.
- First Washington Bike Summit. In March 2015 Washington Bikes held the state’s first bicycle summit – attracting over 170 advocates and professionals from around the state to connect for better bicycling. We can’t wait for next year!
- Connecting advocates for better trails. In 2014 many trail projects made progress, whether they were just getting started, adding mileage, or closing a significant gap.
- Representing you in Olympia. While it’s not over yet, in the 2015 legislative session we passed priority bills to address broken red lights and grow bicycling through outdoor recreation promotion statewide (our work isn’t over this year – write your legislator today to ask for stronger investments in Safe Routes to School).
- Counting bicyclists statewide. Washington Bikes is working to make sure that bicycle riders are counted statewide to improve safety and mobility. In 2015 we are making great advances to establish a permanent bicycle counter system statewide.
- And More! Did we mention our bike travel and tourism promotion work in Snohomish County? Our work on the federal level to establish a non-motorized safety performance measure and to better understand safer street designs? Or the 10 more milestones for Washington state bicycling in 2014?
