Bike-Friendly Washington

WA State 1 - bannerThe League of American Bicyclists designates communities, businesses, universities, and states through their Bike-Friendly America program. Washington state is proud to have been named the #1 Bike-Friendly State in the nation eight years in a row!

Support a more bicycle-friendly Washington by thanking and recognizing the bike-friendly towns, businesses, and universities in Washington state. They’ve recognized that investment in bicycling means investment in healthier people, communities, and local economies.

Communities

Watch the League site for deadlines to apply. If you have questions about how to make your Washington town more bike-friendly, just ask! Contact info@wabikes.org and check out the resources for making your community bicycle-friendly from the League.

An easy first step toward letting the world know your town is bicycle-friendly: Adopt a proclamation each May for National Bicycle Month. We’ve provided sample text you can download and customize to highlight what makes your community special for bicycling.

Businesses

The League provides tips and resources for making your business bicycle-friendly. Consider offering Bicycle Benefits as a way of rewarding your customers and clients who bicycle in; they leave a parking spot for another customer and your total traffic (and revenue) will increase.

Universities

Entering freshmen aren’t asking about parking spots in the numbers they used to–instead, they’re asking about transportation choices, availability of bike parking, and transit service. Forward-thinking universities are planning less automobile parking and more support for bicycling students, from the popular bike-share program at Washington State University to the support the University of Washington gives expansion of the Burke-Gilman Trail. We’re proud to list UW Transportation Services among our organizational members.
