Go By Bike

Go By Bike Background
Go By Bike is a bicycling safety education program that was run by Washington Bikes in collaboration with Olympic College, Pierce College, Bellevue College and North Seattle Community College from 2011 through 2013. The program was funded by a grant from the Federal Highway Administration, locally administered by the Washington State Department of Transportation. The grant funding has ended and participating colleges are continuing the program on an individual basis; some as a stand alone course and others are integrating bicycle curricula into other courses and programs.

Gain College Credit
Program Manager Joshua Miller, PhD, established a 1-credit Physical Education course at each of the colleges with the support of administrators, staff and faculty liaisons and co-instructors. Miller also trained his co-instructors and co-taught the Go By Bike courses at all four colleges. The program has loaner bikes and helmets available to students who do not have bikes or whose bikes are in disrepair.

Tailored to Student Experience
The course and instructors strive to tailor the course to student experience, interests, and abilities. In addition to a lifelong passion for bicycling and working on bikes, Miller had earlier careers in the bicycle industry and urban planning and has completed master’s and PhD research on bicycling. He is certified by the League of American Bicyclists (LAB) as a League Cycling Instructor (LCI).
