The Washington Bikes Bike Everywhere Challenge FAQ

The Washington Bikes Bike Everywhere Challenge FAQ

REGISTRATION
How do I register for the challenge?

Visit the Bike Everywhere Challenge website on Luum.com and click the green “Join Challenge” button. Follow the steps to complete registration.

What kind of vehicles count in the Challenge?

Human-powered and electric-assist bicycles, tricycles and unicycles. Your unicycle, bicycle or tricycle must be able to travel solely under human power, even if it has electric assist. Sorry, Solowheels are not eligible for participation.

What is my organization?

An organization is often your employer, and there can be many teams affiliated with one organization. When you register for the Challenge, you have the option to affiliate yourself with your organization. If you affiliate with your organization, you’ll be able to compare yourself against colleagues within your organization (e.g. Seattle Children’s internal-organization leaderboard) and also compare against other organizations in the inter-organizational leaderboard.

You do not need to affiliate yourself with an organization if you don’t want to — this is optional. Simply select ‘I am not participating as part of an organization.’

How do I reset my password?

To reset your password, visit this link and follow the steps to reset your Luum account password.

How do I change my answers to the account creation and registration questions?

There is no way to change your registration answers on the website. You must e-mail us at Challenge@wabikes.org to make changes for you.

How do I get a free “I Bike WA” t-shirt?

Donate $25 or more to the Washington Bikes Bike Everywhere Challenge, and get a limited-edition t-shirt, special to this year’s Challenge!

TEAMS
How do I create a team?

After joining the challenge, click on the “Create Team” link on the Washington Bikes Bike Everywhere Month Challenge overview page.

How do I invite people to my team?

People can join your team two ways, depending on how you mark ‘Membership’ when you create your team. If you choose ‘Open (anyone can join)’, then folks can find your team and add themselves. If you choose ‘Private (password-protected), then a team captain must invite people to join the team.

To invite others to your team, navigate to the ‘Invite’ tab, type your teammates’ email addresses under ‘Send an invite email’ and hit Send.

Do I have to recreate a team this year, or can I just have the team I had last year?

You’ll need to recreate your team from scratch. The system is set up this way to encourage previous year’s team members to branch out, form their own teams, and grow the challenge.

What is an allowed team size for the Challenge?

To be considered a complete team and to be eligible for prizes, a team must have 4 to 10 people. While we believe teams of 4-10 people fosters the most support and camaraderie for teammates, the Luum system will allow teams of any size.

Can an individual be a part of two or more teams?

Each user can only be on one team. If you wanted to work around this and be on two teams, you could technically create two Challenge accounts. Then you’d have to log trips twice, once on each account, so it might a bit of a hassle.

How do I delete a team?

There is currently no way to delete a team. You can always rename a team that you’ve created or join a different team.

What is a League and how do I join?

Join a league to compete with other people in your industry, your neighborhood, your office, or your department. Leagues can be organization-specific (restricted only to participants from your organization) or open to anyone. Only team captains can join or create leagues.

TEAM CAPTAINS
What’s in a captain’s packet and how do I get mine?

Captain’s ‘packets’ contain a team captain’s T-shirt, bike safety literature, a Bike Everywhere Month poster and water bottles for your teammates (while supplies last). You can pick up your packet in person for free or have it mailed to you for $8. Note that the mailed packet does not contain water bottles.

Here are the options for packet pick-up:
I cannot come pick up my captain’s packet in person. Can I have it mailed to me?

Yes, Cascade will mail captains packets for a $8 fee, although we cannot mail water bottles. To order your captain’s packet you must complete our online form.

Are captain’s packets required for participation?

No. Cascade wants to reward team captains for their leadership during the Bike Everywhere Challenge, but they are not required for participation.

ORGANIZATIONS
Are teams and organizations the same thing?

Not exactly — teams and organizations are a little different. An organization is often your employer, and there can be many teams affiliated with an organization. A team is a smaller group, ideally between 4 and 10 people.

When you registered for the Challenge, you had the option to affiliate yourself with your organization. If you affiliate with your organization you’ll be able to compare yourself against colleagues within your organization (e.g. Seattle Children’s intra-org leaderboard) and also compare against other organizations in the inter-organizational leaderboard.

Do I have to be part of an organization to participate?

No, you do not need to affiliate yourself with an organization if you don’t want to – this is optional.

When you register for the challenge, you’ll be asked to choose your organization or select ‘I am not participating as part of an organization.’

I don’t see my organization listed, how do I add my organization?

Check to make sure your organization isn’t listed under a different spelling – for instance “University of Washington” is listed instead of “UW”. If you can’t find your organization, get in touch with support@luum.com and Luum support staff will help you add it.

Is there a way to add our logo to our organization profile?

Get in touch with support@luum.com and Luum support staff will help you add it.

How do I join/change my organization after joining the challenge?

You cannot change your organization affiliation if you have already joined the challenge. Let us know at challenge@wabikes.org which organization you are a part of, and we will add you to that organization.

TRIPS
What counts as a trip?

A bike trip in the Bike Everywhere Challenge is defined as a ride outside greater than or equal to 0.10 miles in distance. A commute trip is defined as a trip between home and the school or work. All other trips made during the workday or for getting around town should be designated as ‘other.’

More generally, we define trip as a ride with a destination. If you are a multi-destination ride, you may count each leg (if each leg is more than 0.10 miles) as a trip. Sorry, but only outdoor bike trips (no spin or indoor biking miles) count in the contest.

What is the difference between logging a round trip and two separate trips?
The only difference between logging a round trip and logging two single trips is that if you enter your ride as a round trip, you will enter the total mileage of the two trips in the miles field, and the distance will be split equally into two trips on the calendar.

How do I edit an existing trip (e.g., to change the distance)?

You cannot currently edit existing trips. Instead, you’ll want to delete and re-add trips with the correct distance value.

To delete a trip, click on the date in the calendar and view the trip details in the list below the calendar. Click on the link for “delete trip(s)”. You can also click on the “x” icon within the cell of the calendar date to delete all of the trips on that date.

How many trips can I log in a day?

You can log as many bike trips as you’d like per day, and you can designate whether or not your trip is a commute trip to and from work. Washington Bikes tracks how many commute trips have been logged, so we encourage you to mark your trips accordingly. Note that this Challenge defines a trip as 0.10 miles or more, ridden outside (not on an indoor bike).

Is there a deadline for logging trips?

Users will have a grace period of fourteen days to log their bike trips. The calendar date will lock after fourteen days, meaning that on the 15th of the month you will no longer be able to add or edit trips on the 1st. The last day to log a trip in the Challenge will be Sunday, June 5 at 11:59 p.m.

MISCELLANY
Is this a free event?

Yes, but donations are welcome! Anyone can participate for free, and any donations go to support Washington Bikes. Donate $25 or more to the Washington Bikes Bike Everywhere Challenge, and get a limited-edition t-shirt, special to this year’s Challenge!

I’m interested in using Bike Month graphics to promote this event. Where can I find these?

You can find downloadable Bike Month graphics here beginning in early March. Thanks for promoting Bike Everywhere Month!

Can I participate in the Challenge if I don’t live in Washington State?

Yes! Riders participate in the Challenge from all over the United States and even internationally. We will not be able to send mailing materials, such as team captain’s packets and prizes, out of the Pacific Northwest region.

How can I see my stats from last year?

If you participated in the 2015 Bike Everywhere Challenge, you can view your past stats here.

How can I see my commute rate? How can I mark work vs. non work days?

This year’s challenge is not commute-specific – we’re tracking all types of bike trips – so the system does not track commute rate. The primary metrics of individual competition this year are number of total bike trips, number of commute trips (you’ll be able to specify on your trip log whether or not a bike trip was a commute trip), and miles. For teams and organizations, the main metrics will be average trips or miles per rider and average commute trips per rider.
