{"id":9430,"date":"2014-08-26T10:24:50","date_gmt":"2014-08-26T17:24:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wabikes.org\/?p=9430"},"modified":"2014-08-26T10:33:14","modified_gmt":"2014-08-26T17:33:14","slug":"cascade-bicycle-club-washington-bikes-growing-bicycling-improving-lives-together","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wabikes.org\/index.php\/2014\/08\/26\/cascade-bicycle-club-washington-bikes-growing-bicycling-improving-lives-together\/","title":{"rendered":"Cascade Bicycle Club and Washington Bikes: Growing Bicycling and Improving Lives Together"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">By Barb Chamberlain and Elizabeth Kiker<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p>The two of us agree: It\u2019s no accident that the #1 Bicycle-Friendly State is home to the nation\u2019s largest bike club.\u00a0The people of Washington savor the beautiful outdoors, a history of citizen activism and more miles of trails than any other state in the West.<\/p>\n<p>Put those together and you have all the necessary ingredients for <strong>improving lives through bicycling<\/strong>\u2014<a title=\"Cascade Bicycle Club\" href=\"http:\/\/www.cascade.org\" target=\"_blank\">Cascade\u2019s <\/a>new motto\u2014and <strong>growing bicycling statewide<\/strong>\u2014Washington Bikes\u2019 motto. That winning formula is why Cascade Bicycle Club has recently become a Gold Wheel <a title=\"Organizational Memberships\" href=\"http:\/\/wabikes.org\/support-us\/org-memberships\/\">organizational member<\/a> of Washington Bikes, aligning themselves with the statewide mission of WA Bikes.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/wabikes.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/Elizabeth-Kiker.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-9431\" alt=\"Elizabeth Kiker\" src=\"http:\/\/wabikes.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/Elizabeth-Kiker.jpg\" width=\"78\" height=\"93\" \/><\/a>Success depends on working well with others and we know how important it is to have strong local and regional bike organizations working closely together and speaking in a unified voice when they go to the legislature. As we transform the region for bicycling, we are grateful to have a strong partnership with WA Bikes to ensure a coherent voice in Olympia is speaking up for cycling. \u2013Elizabeth<\/strong><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>[Tweet &#8220;Partners for better bicycling: @CascadeBicycle + @WAbikes&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p>Cascade and WA Bikes have complementary programs in areas such as bicycle safety education and we\u2019re constantly exploring new opportunities to join forces. A few examples:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>We\u2019re working together to plan a statewide bike conference to be held in 2015.<\/li>\n<li>Washington Bikes volunteers now staff a booth each year at the packet pick-up for Cascade\u2019s sell-out Seattle-to-Portland (STP) ride.<\/li>\n<li>As WA Bikes works to promote bike tourism, Cascade\u2019s great organized rides such as the Ride Around Washington and the new Cascade Bicycling Center all boost Washington\u2019s profile as an incredible destination for bike travelers.<\/li>\n<li>For a while in 2012-2013, we even had a board member in common\u2014Joe Platzner served on both boards, then stepped down to serve as the interim executive director at Cascade.<\/li>\n<li>The two of us meet almost weekly to compare notes so that more gets done for bicycling and we don\u2019t miss an opportunity to work together.<\/li>\n<li>We were simultaneously but separately working on the same idea: business cards that biking customers could leave behind to show business owners that bikes mean business for them. We collaborate on grant proposals, we visit elected officials\u00a0<\/strong><\/em><em><strong>together, we talk about the strengths each organization brings to the partnership and how we can leverage those.
