That&#8217;s certainly the tone of many a comment on any story about bicycles.<\/p>\n<p>With back-to-school season upon us, it&#8217;s time to examine this.\u00a0I suggest a different and far more\u00a0<strong>reality-based<\/strong>\u00a0way of thinking about how street traffic moves.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_9091\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/wabikes.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Seattle-traffic_jam.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9091\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-9091\" alt=\"IMG_0764\" src=\"http:\/\/wabikes.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Seattle-traffic_jam-300x186.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"186\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wabikes.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Seattle-traffic_jam-300x186.jpg 300w, https:\/\/wabikes.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Seattle-traffic_jam.jpg 459w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-9091\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Funny &#8212; they never show THIS shot in ads for cars.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">NOTE: This post really belongs on a site like <\/span><em style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">Car and Driver Magazine<\/em><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">\u00a0or <\/span><i style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">Motor Trends\u00a0<\/i><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">to reach the right audience, but if you&#8217;ll share it on your Facebook page you&#8217;ll at least get it to your non-driving friends.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>My main point, in case you&#8217;d miss it if I buried it further down the post:<strong>\u00a0There is nothing guaranteeing any street user anything like &#8220;unimpeded speedy passage with no need to slow down, ever.&#8221; There just isn&#8217;t. Get over it. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">[Tweet &#8220;Your right to speedy traffic? Doesn&#8217;t exist. Get over it.&#8221;]<\/span><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>For the record, this attitude adjustment applies equally to someone on a bike who grumps about vehicles in your way, although our more flexible mode of transportation often helps us avoid the worst of it.<\/p>\n<p>In response to comments like this\u00a0&#8212;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bikestylespokane.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/FB_bikes-same-speed-as-traffic1.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"FB_bikes same speed as traffic\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/bikestylespokane.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/FB_bikes-same-speed-as-traffic1.png\" width=\"697\" height=\"54\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8212;\u00a0let me point out that typical street traffic includes all of the following, every single day (well, except maybe for item #1, which probably doesn&#8217;t happen every day):<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">Drivers who drive the actual speed limit rather than letting their speed creep up\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">by 2-3 miles per hour. Or 4-5. Or&#8230;.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">Buses stopping to let riders get on\/off<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">Drivers making left turns across oncoming traffic<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">Passing through a school or park zone, or an area that has adopted <\/span><a style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\" title=\"Neighborhood Safe Streets Passes Washington State Senate 45-2\" href=\"http:\/\/wabikes.org\/2013\/04\/17\/neighborhood-safe-streets-passes-washington-state-senate-45-2\/\">the Neighborhood Safe Streets 20mph limit we made possible by getting a new law passed<\/a><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">Big semis or buses that have to swing wide to make a turn<\/span><\/li>\n<li><a title=\"When I Get Older: Why I\u2019m Counting on a Multimodal System\" href=\"http:\/\/wabikes.org\/2014\/07\/28\/when-i-get-older-im-counting-on-multimodal-system-seniors-bicycling-transit\/\"><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">Drivers concerned about their declining abilities to see and hear <\/span><\/a><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">clutching the steering wheel and peering over it while they travel down the street at slightly under the speed limit<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">Pedestrians crossing at any intersection (in Washington every intersection is a legal crossing even if there&#8217;s no painted crosswalk, unless signage forbids crossing there)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">Having to veer around some kind of hazard in the street: part of a blown-out tire, an item that fell off the back of an unsecured load, a pothole<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">Emergency vehicles for which everyone has to pull over<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">A driver hitting the brakes because someone&#8217;s pet &#8212; or child &#8212; is in the street<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">People slowing to look for an address or read the sign name on a cross street<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">A train passing through and making everyone on both sides of the tracks wait<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">People causing collisions &#8212; everyone waits while the wreckage is cleared and the ambulance takes away the bodies<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This is just a sampling and you probably have your own favorite story about something that hung you up when you were in a hurry.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">[Tweet &#8220;What causes MOST traffic slow-downs you encounter? Not bikes.&#8221;]<\/span><\/p>\n<p>People in traffic have <strong>many<\/strong> causes for slowing, stopping, and sometimes even choosing an alternate route.\u00a0Someone riding a bike is only one of many such things you&#8217;ll encounter in your driving day.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" title=\"School-Zone-Signs-Children at Play\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/bikestylespokane.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/School-Zone-Signs-Children-at-Play.gif\" width=\"275\" height=\"272\" \/>You never had any reason to expect that you could just barrel straight to your destination without anything slowing you down.<\/p>\n<p>Your complaints about conditions to the contrary are grounded in that alternate mythic world created by the makers of TV commercials who put a lone car on an empty, closed course amid striking scenery. (And if that&#8217;s the world\u00a0<strong>you<\/strong> drive in, it&#8217;s pretty easy to pass the person on the bicycle with more than three feet to spare.)<strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If you drive as if nothing can slow you down, it&#8217;s only a matter of time before you personally administer the death penalty or serious injury to a vulnerable user of the streets we all own and share.<\/p>\n<p>[Tweet &#8220;Do you really want to hand down the death penalty just for biking or walking? Drive w\/care.&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Real Time, Not Imagined Time<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Realistically, for how many minutes or seconds does someone riding a bike hold a driver back for more time than it takes to traverse a city block?<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m serious when I say &#8220;seconds;&#8221; as anyone watching a really bad commercial can tell you, seconds can drag on for what seem like hours. (<a title=\"How Long Does It Take to Ride Your Bike? It\u2019s All in the Attitude\" href=\"http:\/\/wabikes.org\/2014\/07\/25\/how-long-does-a-bike-ride-last-its-all-in-the-attitude\/\">See a travel time comparison in the footnotes on this post about attitudes.<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>Arterials have multiple lanes allowing a driver to get past a bicycle. The true elapsed time you&#8217;re &#8220;stuck&#8221; just isn&#8217;t that long if you time it.\u00a0The 3-5 seconds you&#8217;re behind the bike before you can safely pass feel far longer than they really are.<\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;re in incredibly heavy traffic and can&#8217;t change lanes, in an urban setting you&#8217;re not going fast anyway and the person on the bike is probably keeping up with traffic just fine. I know I do and I&#8217;m not any kind of athlete. Sure, I&#8217;m going slower heading up\u00a0Seattle hills\u00a0than on the flat streets of downtown Spokane, but even so when motor vehicle traffic is heavy I may well pass cars if I have a bike lane since I take up less space than a car.<\/p>\n<h3><b>Your Challenge, Should You Choose to Accept It<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>If you&#8217;re going to complain about someone on a bike, what if you kept track of\u00a0<strong>everything<\/strong>\u00a0that creates a change of speed in your driving? You might be surprised.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bikestylespokane.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/Semi-truck-turning-wide.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"Semi truck turning wide\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/bikestylespokane.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/Semi-truck-turning-wide.jpg\" width=\"760\" height=\"503\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Then when you get where you&#8217;re going and you can&#8217;t find a parking spot, imagine that a couple of the cars ahead of you weren&#8217;t there because those people chose to ride a bike instead. It\u2019s All in the Attitude\" href=\"http:\/\/wabikes.org\/2014\/07\/25\/how-long-does-a-bike-ride-last-its-all-in-the-attitude\/\">You might also get a very different sense of the passage of time if you rode a bike<\/a>, but I already wrote that post.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Your Turn<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>(A Miss Bikey Manners request:\u00a0<strong>Refrain from &#8220;all people who drive do X&#8221; or &#8220;all people who bike do Y&#8221; in your response.<\/strong>\u00a0That&#8217;s lazy and fails the test of basic logic.)<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">Do you think drivers notice people on bikes more than other traffic elements because bikes are in the minority, because they themselves haven&#8217;t ridden and thus biking is an oddity, or for some other reason?<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\"><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">Answer quickly: When you think of a traffic slowdown what&#8217;s the\u00a0<\/span><strong style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">first image<\/strong><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\"> that comes to mind?<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li>How can this point best be made when people complain about bikes? She served 4 years in the Idaho state legislature, the youngest woman ever elected to the House and then the Senate.
