{"id":8888,"date":"2014-07-14T18:03:52","date_gmt":"2014-07-15T01:03:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wabikes.org\/?p=8888"},"modified":"2014-09-10T15:21:28","modified_gmt":"2014-09-10T22:21:28","slug":"working-better-bicycling-north-central-washington","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wabikes.org\/index.php\/2014\/07\/14\/working-better-bicycling-north-central-washington\/","title":{"rendered":"Working for Better Bicycling in North Central Washington"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>After <a title=\"Bikes Are Blooming in Wenatchee\" href=\"http:\/\/wabikes.org\/2014\/07\/10\/bikes-blooming-wenatchee\/\">a great trip to Wenatchee last week<\/a> and hearing what local bike advocates are focusing on, I wanted to share the work of Washington Bikes in north central Washington the past 2-3 years.\u00a0Our route to better bicycling all over the state relies on (at least) 3 things:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-8889\" alt=\"Map of Washington State Department of Transportation North Central Region: Chelan, Okanogan, Douglas, and Grant Counties\" src=\"http:\/\/wabikes.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/WSDOT_North-Central-Region-Map.gif\" width=\"201\" height=\"264\" \/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>the day-to-day efforts of people who live and bike in their community every day<\/li>\n<li>the priorities identified by local advocacy organizations where those exist and by local transportation planners<\/li>\n<li>our role as the state organization helping amplify these local voices and share great projects and ideas from town to town.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>What we&#8217;ve done the past few years in north central Washington*\u00a0that adds to the tally from local efforts:<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Washington Bikes to School<span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">Around <\/span><strong>2,300 middle-school students<\/strong><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">\u00a0have learned to ride with confidence thanks to <a title=\"Safe Routes to School\" href=\"http:\/\/wabikes.org\/growing-bicycling\/srts\/\">our bike\/walk safety curriculum<\/a> in <\/span><strong>Brewster, Bridgeport, Moses Lake, Omak, Pateros, Quincy, <\/strong><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">and<\/span> <strong>Wahluke<\/strong> <span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">school districts<\/span><b style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">.<\/b><\/p>\n<h3><b>Washington Bikes and Walks More Places<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>In the 2013 legislative session local projects received <strong>$5,384,545 in state investments we worked for<\/strong> that all mean more comfortable and connected miles you can ride:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Quincy <\/strong>Valley K-7 path<\/li>\n<li><strong>Brewster\u2019s <\/strong>Ferry Street safety improvements<\/li>\n<li>Okanagan and Red Apple Road pedestrians enhancements in <strong>Wenatchee<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Susie Stephens Trail Phase 2 in <strong>Winthrop<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Rocky Reach Trail connection to <strong>Wenatchee\u2019s <\/strong>Apple Capital Loop Trail extension<\/li>\n<li><strong>Omak <\/strong>Complete Streets project<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>Working with Local Leaders So That Washington Bikes<\/b><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>In 2012 we brought <a title=\"Hub &amp; Spoke Revamped: First Stop Wenatchee\" href=\"http:\/\/wabikes.org\/2012\/04\/02\/hub-spoke-revamped-first-stop-wenatchee\/\">a workshop on Growing Biking and Walking in Your Community<\/a> to <strong>Wenatchee<\/strong>, drawing people from a wide region interested in creating more comfortable conditions for people biking and walking to share the streets with all modes.<\/li>\n<li>Our route coordination for <a title=\"USBR10, Northern Washington State: Travel Washington by Bike\" href=\"http:\/\/wabikes.org\/growing-bicycling\/us-bicycle-route-system\/usbr10\/\">USBR10<\/a>\u00a0in 2013 took us to meetings with transportation planners and officials in <strong>Okanogan County.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>We met with a number of local advocates in <strong>Wenatchee\u00a0<\/strong>in 2013 and supported their efforts to turn people out on behalf of the bike master plan update that was subsequently adopted by the Wenatchee Valley Council of Governments. (Change takes time and we&#8217;re in it for the long haul; <a title=\"Create a Bicycle Friendly Wenatchee\" href=\"http:\/\/wabikes.org\/2011\/03\/31\/create-a-bicycle-friendly-wenatchee\/\">we published a blog post in March 2011 seeking input for the plan<\/a>.)<\/li>\n<li>We talked with the publisher and editor of the <i>Wenatchee World<\/i> about the economic value of bicycling\u2014a message that showed up in editorials in support of the plan, and we sure love that they both ride so they really get the view from the saddle.<\/li>\n<li>We rallied people from throughout the region to testify on behalf of bicycling and walking investments at the <a title=\"Make Your Voice Heard At the Washington State Senate Listening Sessions\" href=\"http:\/\/wabikes.org\/2013\/09\/05\/make-your-voice-heard\/\"><strong>Senate Transportation Listening Session<\/strong><\/a> held in <strong>Wenatchee <\/strong>Sept. 23, 2013.<\/li>\n<li><a title=\"Bikes Are Blooming in Wenatchee\" href=\"http:\/\/wabikes.org\/2014\/07\/10\/bikes-blooming-wenatchee\/\">We came back in 2014<\/a> to meet again for an update on local projects and to look for opportunities to partner in new initiatives.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>Washington Bikes For Travel<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>In spring 2014 we brought out\u00a0<em><a title=\"Cycling Sojourner: A Guide to the Best Multi-Day Bike Tours in Washington\" href=\"http:\/\/wabikes.org\/support-us\/shop\/cycling-sojourner-best-bike-tours-wa\/\" target=\"_blank\">Cycling Sojourner: A Guide to the Best Multi-Day Tours in Washington<\/a>.<\/em> The first guide book to multi-day bike tours in Washington state to be published in over a decade, the book includes\u00a0<a title=\"Destinations: Bike North Central Washington\" href=\"http:\/\/wabikes.org\/destinations\/north-central-washington\/\" target=\"_blank\">two tours that traverse north central Washington<\/a>\u00a0and great tips for developing your own routes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>The Okanogan: Overlooked Northern Reaches.\u00a0<\/strong>Towns: Tonasket, Loomis, Oroville, Chesaw, Curlew, Republic, Wauconda.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Epic Washington: North Cascades Highway to the Methow Valley<\/strong>\u00a0(traversing part of <a title=\"USBR10, Northern Washington State: Travel Washington by Bike\" href=\"http:\/\/wabikes.org\/growing-bicycling\/us-bicycle-route-system\/usbr10-northern-washington-state-us-bicycle-route-system-travel-washington-by-bike\/\" target=\"_blank\">USBR 10<\/a>). Towns:\u00a0Mount Vernon, Concrete, Rockport, Marblemount, Mazama, Winthrop, Twisp, Carlton, Methow, Pateros, Chelan, Entiat, Wenatchee.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">We have similar lists for other regions of the state; watch for those posts in days to come to get an understanding of just how much goes on all around\u00a0<\/span><a style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\" title=\"Washington State Is America\u2019s #1 Bicycle Friendly State 7th Year in a Row\" href=\"http:\/\/wabikes.org\/2014\/05\/01\/washington-state-americas-top-bicycle-friendly-state-7th-year-in-a-row\/\">the #1 Bicycle Friendly State<\/a><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">*Where&#8217;s North Central Washington?
