Unfortunately in Washington state and on the federal level, no requirements exist to develop strong robust performance measures around non-motorized safety. Comment before June 30 to tell the US Department of Transportation that Safety Counts!<\/h3>\n<p>As cyclists, we know about safety. It\u2019s a constant topic of conversation: how best to be seen, the best route to take, and words of concern (\u201cbike safe!\u201d) we often hear from friends and family before a ride.<\/p>\n<p>Yet despite all the talk and worry about bicycling safety, there\u2019s rarely accountability at the state and federal levels of government to find solutions to prevent bicycling injuries or deaths.<\/p>\n<p>In Washington state, while serious injuries and deaths are on the decline for many motor-vehicle\u00a0 incidents, we&#8217;re falling short of our state&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/targetzero.com\/\">&#8220;Target Zero&#8221;<\/a> goal of zero deaths and serious injuries by 2030 for those that walk and bike.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_3633\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/wabikes.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/pedbikeimages.org_Cynecki.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3633\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-3633\" alt=\"Their safety needs to count, too. pedbikeimages.org\/M. The US Department of Transportation\u00a0is now in its final week of accepting comments on its plan to measure whether or not the nation\u2019s transportation system is working for all Americans.<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/span> Unfortunately, its first draft fails to include any goal, accountability, or requirements to reduce the 16% of all fatal crashes that include people who bike and walk.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/cts.vresp.com\/c\/?WashingtonBikes\/3b62ab3232\/794e5bd3a3\/05cf115d1c\" target=\"_blank\">Tell the US Department of Transportation\u00a0 that safety counts and improving bicycling safety should count, too<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The US Department of Transportation needs to hear from you today. Let them know that <a href=\"http:\/\/cts.vresp.com\/c\/?WashingtonBikes\/3b62ab3232\/794e5bd3a3\/8db5c652fa\" target=\"_blank\">safety for bicycling counts<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to their helpful <a href=\"http:\/\/cts.vresp.com\/c\/?WashingtonBikes\/3b62ab3232\/794e5bd3a3\/ba717eec99\" target=\"_blank\">letter writing tool<\/a>, the League of American Bicyclists has provided <a href=\"http:\/\/cts.vresp.com\/c\/?WashingtonBikes\/3b62ab3232\/794e5bd3a3\/8e7e69d2da\" target=\"_blank\">additional background<\/a> on why we need to do better to count bicyclists and improve our transportation system for everyone.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>If they don&#8217;t count, it doesn&#8217;t count.
