Aspirational goals are great. Plans are even better. But best of all is actually accomplishing what you set out to do.<\/div>\n
Which brings us to the Seattle Bicycle Master Plan<\/a>. <\/span><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n

The plan, unveiled to much fanfare in 2007, had lofty goals: triple<\/a> the amount of bicycling in Seattle within ten years, reduce<\/a> bike crashes by one-third during the same period, and \u201cmake Seattle the best community for bicycling<\/a> in the United States.\u201d<\/p>\n

Problem is, the plan is woefully underfunded. <\/span>According to a February story<\/a> in Seattle’s Publicola<\/i> news blog, funding was projected to fall about $165 million short of the $240 million required\u2014a shortfall of nearly 70 percent. <\/span>The City\u2019s Pedestrian Master Plan<\/a> is similarly short of money. <\/span><\/p>\n

In response, a coalition<\/a> of citizens\u2019 groups has formed under the banner of \u201cStreets for All Seattle.\u201d Their aim: Work with City officials to find $30 million in annual revenue to make the bicycle and pedestrian plans a reality, and to fund <\/span>Metro transit service.<\/p>\n

Specific sources for the money have been discussed but final decisions haven\u2019t been made. Instead, a Streets for All spokesperson said<\/a>, \u201cWe want to have a conversation with the council, the mayor, with all of our partners to see what really works [for stable funding].\u201d <\/span>Possibilities include things such as a motor-vehicle licensing fee or an increased commercial parking tax.<\/p>\n
