{"id":603,"date":"2011-05-03T19:00:00","date_gmt":"2011-05-03T19:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wabikes.org\/2011\/05\/03\/get-out-of-my-bike-lane\/"},"modified":"2013-01-05T20:40:04","modified_gmt":"2013-01-05T20:40:04","slug":"get-out-of-my-bike-lane","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wabikes.org\/index.php\/2011\/05\/03\/get-out-of-my-bike-lane\/","title":{"rendered":"Get out of my bike lane!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Does this look familiar?\u00a0 I regularly encounter parked vehicles that take a portion of the bike trail.\u00a0 I spotted this particular offender last summer on Seattle&#8217;s Waterfront Trail.<\/p>\n<div style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/-TQnsGMT1NYw\/Tb8lUmwMiPI\/AAAAAAAAAdA\/N0eUwkYTfh8\/s1600\/expeditiontrail.jpeg\" style=\"margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\"><img decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" src=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/-TQnsGMT1NYw\/Tb8lUmwMiPI\/AAAAAAAAAdA\/N0eUwkYTfh8\/s1600\/expeditiontrail.jpeg\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>Or maybe you&#8217;ve come across a vehicle or two&#8211;or five!&#8211;parked in your bike lane.<\/p>\n<table align=\"center\" cellpadding=\"0\" cellspacing=\"0\" style=\"margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/-W8DjiArQsSE\/Tb8noLt5qNI\/AAAAAAAAAdE\/Jy31yNKJI98\/s1600\/bikelaneviolators.jpg\" style=\"margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" height=\"240\" src=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/-W8DjiArQsSE\/Tb8noLt5qNI\/AAAAAAAAAdE\/Jy31yNKJI98\/s320\/bikelaneviolators.jpg\" width=\"320\" \/><\/a><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"text-align: center;\"><i>bicyclewatchdog.org<\/i><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>If you have your cell phone handy, you could call and report the violator and hope justice will be served.\u00a0 Or you can snap a photo, record the location details and the license plate, and post it on a website called <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mybikelane.com\/\"><b>My Bike Lane<\/b><\/a> for all the world to see.<\/p>\n<p>New York City tops the list with over 6000 bike lane violators posted, and the top offender is a UPS truck with 28 recorded violations.\u00a0 Seattle and Spokane are represented on My Bike Lane, with 32 and 56 recorded violations respectively.\u00a0 I don&#8217;t know if any of the reported violators on My Bike Lane get their just dessert as a result of this public outing, but I suspect that the individuals who report them feel some satisfaction by reporting the scofflaws.<\/p>\n<p>If you live in Spokane, you have another course of action available to you.\u00a0 Snap a photo of the offending vehicle, then email it along with license plate number and location details to the Spokane Police Department at <b><a href=\"mailto:carparkedinbikelane@spokanepolice.org\">carparkedinbikelane@spokanepolice.org<\/a><\/b>.\u00a0 The police send a letter to the violator informing them that they are not allowed to park in a bike lane.\u00a0 Repeat violators are supposed to receive a citation.<\/p>\n<p>Bradley Bleck of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bikespokane.net\/join2.html\"><b>Spokane Bicycle Advisory Board<\/b><\/a> reported several bike lane violators using the system.\u00a0 He received one email confirmation from the police department confirming that they sent a warning letter to the violator, but he doesn&#8217;t know if there was follow up on his other reports.<\/p>\n<p>Although there may some inconsistencies regarding follow up, the Spokane Police Department demonstrated a willingness to work with local bicyclists by establishing a reporting system.\u00a0 How do you report bike lane violators in your community?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Does this look familiar?\u00a0 I regularly encounter parked vehicles that take a portion of the [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":4,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"jetpack_post_was_ever_published":false,"_jetpack_newsletter_access":"","footnotes":"","jetpack_publicize_message":"","jetpack_is_tweetstorm":false,"jetpack_publicize_feature_enabled":true,"jetpack_social_post_already_shared":false,"jetpack_social_options":{"image_generator_settings":{"template":"highway","enabled":false}}},"categories":[49,63,15,11,23,25],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-603","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-attitudes","category-legal","category-safety","category-seattle-king-county-wa","category-spokane-county-wa","category-transportation"],"jetpack_publicize_connections":[],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v23.7 - https:\/\/yoast.com\/wordpress\/plugins\/seo\/ -->\n<title>Get out of my bike lane!
