{"id":595,"date":"2011-05-17T15:00:00","date_gmt":"2011-05-17T15:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wabikes.org\/2011\/05\/17\/should-the-ride-of-silence-be-silent\/"},"modified":"2013-01-05T20:39:28","modified_gmt":"2013-01-05T20:39:28","slug":"should-the-ride-of-silence-be-silent","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wabikes.org\/index.php\/2011\/05\/17\/should-the-ride-of-silence-be-silent\/","title":{"rendered":"Should the Ride of Silence be silent?"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/-P2N5_8jDUds\/S_Hizifb_1I\/AAAAAAAAAD4\/Q0SAsOU026M\/s1600\/ros_logo_Xsmall.jpg\" style=\"clear: right; cssfloat: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;\"><img decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" j8=\"true\" src=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/-P2N5_8jDUds\/S_Hizifb_1I\/AAAAAAAAAD4\/Q0SAsOU026M\/s1600\/ros_logo_Xsmall.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>It began in 2003 as a bike ride in\u00a0Dallas to remember a\u00a0cyclist who was hit by a mirror on a passing school bus and killed.\u00a0 Today it has evolved into an international event, with 250 rides scheduled in nearly 20 countries.<\/p>\n<p>The <b><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rideofsilence.org\/main.php\">Ride of Silence<\/a><\/b> was created to remember cyclists who have been killed or injured on our roadways, to raise public awareness that bikes belong on our roads, and to encourage everyone to share the road.\u00a0 This year&#8217;s ride occurs on May 18 and five Washington communities are hosting Rides of Silence:\u00a0 Seattle, Spokane, Tacoma, Vancouver and Wenatchee.\u00a0 <b><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rideofsilence.org\/locations-domestic.php?s=WA#WA\">Ride details<\/a><\/b> can be found on the ROS website.<\/p>\n<p>Thousands of bicyclists are drawn to this somber ride because they know someone who has been killed or injured on our public roads, or they themselves have been injured by a vehicle collision.\u00a0 I have ridden several Rides of of Silence&#8211;to remember friends who were killed and to remember my own collision with a vehicle.\u00a0 It can be an emotional experience.
