{"id":585,"date":"2011-06-07T15:00:00","date_gmt":"2011-06-07T15:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wabikes.org\/2011\/06\/07\/coming-to-a-city-near-you-car-free-summer-events\/"},"modified":"2013-01-05T20:42:59","modified_gmt":"2013-01-05T20:42:59","slug":"coming-to-a-city-near-you-car-free-summer-events","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wabikes.org\/index.php\/2011\/06\/07\/coming-to-a-city-near-you-car-free-summer-events\/","title":{"rendered":"Coming to a City Near You: Car-free summer events"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"font-family: inherit;\"><span style=\"font-size: x-small;\"><br \/><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"font-family: inherit; margin-bottom: 0in;\"><span style=\"font-size: x-small;\">What happens when you take cars off the streets for awhile?<\/span><span style=\"font-size: x-small;\">\u00a0 Folks come out to bike, walk, skate and socialize with each other!<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"font-family: inherit; margin-bottom: 0in;\"><span style=\"font-size: x-small;\"><br \/><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"font-family: inherit; margin-bottom: 0in;\"><span style=\"font-size: x-small;\">Ciclovia (Spanish for bike path) refers to events that temporarily close streets to vehicle traffic, turning them into public space for people.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: x-small;\">\u00a0 Bogota, Columbia, the city that pioneered the Ciclovia movement, has closed streets to cars every Sunday since 1976.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: x-small;\">\u00a0 People of all ages and classes pour into the streets to do everything except drive.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: x-small;\">\u00a0 Watch a video on Ciclovia in Bogota.<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"font-family: inherit; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: x-small;\"><br \/><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"font-family: inherit; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: x-small;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" frameborder=\"0\" height=\"294\" src=\"http:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/12564994?js_api=1&#038;js_swf_id=vimeo_player&#038;title=0&#038;byline=0&#038;portrait=0&#038;color=9086c0\" width=\"392\"><\/iframe> <\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"font-family: inherit; margin-bottom: 0in;\"><span style=\"font-size: x-small;\"><br \/><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"font-family: inherit; margin-bottom: 0in;\"><span style=\"font-size: x-small;\">Ciclovia style events are appearing in US cities, including communities in Washington.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: x-small;\">\u00a0 Seattle <a href=\"http:\/\/www.seattle.gov\/transportation\/summerstreets.htm\"><b>Summer Streets<\/b><\/a> are car-free events scheduled in four different neighborhoods.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: x-small;\">\u00a0 The city also closes a portion of Lake Washington Boulevard to vehicles most Sundays between May 1 and September 25 for <b><a href=\"http:\/\/www.seattle.gov\/parks\/bicyclesunday\/\">Bicycle Sunday<\/a><\/b>.<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"font-family: inherit; margin-bottom: 0in;\"><span style=\"font-size: x-small;\"><br \/><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"font-family: inherit; margin-bottom: 0in;\"><span style=\"font-size: x-small;\">Spokane is bringing its <a href=\"http:\/\/summerparkways.com\/about\/\"><b>SummerParkways<\/b><\/a> to three neighborhoods, one of which will be an evening event.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: x-small;\">\u00a0 Four miles of roadway will be closed and citizens are encouraged to come out for fun and physical activity.<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"font-family: inherit; margin-bottom: 0in;\"><span style=\"font-size: x-small;\"><br \/><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"font-family: inherit; margin-bottom: 0in;\"><span style=\"font-size: x-small;\">Although Vancouver does not organize a car-free event, folks can head across the Columbia River and experience Portland\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.portlandsundayparkways.org\/\"><b>Sunday Parkways<\/b><\/a>.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: x-small;\">\u00a0 Five parkway events are planned in different neighborhoods throughout the summer.<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"font-family: inherit; margin-bottom: 0in;\"><span style=\"font-size: x-small;\"><br \/><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"font-family: inherit; margin-bottom: 0in;\"><span style=\"font-size: x-small;\">Folks in Tacoma can have a car-free experience every weekend.
