{"id":569,"date":"2011-07-08T19:45:00","date_gmt":"2011-07-08T19:45:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wabikes.org\/2011\/07\/08\/alert-federal-bikingwalking-programs-under-attack\/"},"modified":"2011-07-08T19:45:00","modified_gmt":"2011-07-08T19:45:00","slug":"alert-federal-bikingwalking-programs-under-attack","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wabikes.org\/index.php\/2011\/07\/08\/alert-federal-bikingwalking-programs-under-attack\/","title":{"rendered":"Alert: Federal Biking\/Walking Programs Under Attack!"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"font-family: inherit;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span>We&#8217;re passing along an urgent call for action from our national partner, the <strong>Alliance for Biking and Walking<\/strong>.\u00a0  The programs under attack benefit bicycle and pedestrian projects and  Safe Routes to School projects all around our state.\u00a0 Please <em><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/capwiz.com\/lab\/utr\/1\/LUQLQDFCVS\/LPLMQDFCWU\/7104034941.\" target=\"_blank\">take action<\/a><\/strong><\/em> today!<\/span><br \/>\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"font-family: inherit; text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">**\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 **\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 **\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 **<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"font-family: inherit;\">   <span style=\"font-size: small;\">DEDICATED FUNDING FOR BICYCLING AND WALKING HAS BEEN CUT in the House&#8217;s Transportation proposal<em>. <strong>Chairman  Mica would eliminate critical Transportation Enhancements, Safe Routes  to School and Recreational Trails Programs, programs that he referred to  as<\/strong><\/em><strong>\u00a0\u201cnot in the national interest\u201d.<\/strong>\u00a0Chairman  Mica\u2019s statement that these uses remain \u201celigible\u201d for funding is  worthless; without dedicated funding for these three programs they are  effectively eliminated.<\/p>\n<p>Things on the Senate side are not much better. Senator James Inhofe, a lead negotiator in the Senate debate, declared that\u00a0<strong>one of his TOP THREE priorities for the transportation bill is to eliminate \u2018frivolous spending for bike trails.\u2019\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0This  is in direct conflict with Senator Barbara Boxer\u2019s commitment to  maintain dedicated funding for biking and walking.\u00a0 However, the Senate  is working towards a bi-partisan solution \u2013 and Senator Inhofe\u2019s  comments mean funding for bicycling and pedestrian programs is at risk  of total elimination.<\/p>\n<p><u>Not in the National Interest?<\/u><\/span>      <span style=\"font-size: small;\"><br \/>Biking and walking make up 12 percent of all trips in the US \u2013 even as  funding for biking and walking projects only account for 1.5% of the  federal transportation budget. \u2013 that\u2019s more than 4 billion bicycle  trips and 40 billion walking trips a year- including trips to work,  school, shopping and for recreation and tourism.<\/p>\n<p><u>Frivolous?<\/u><\/span>   <span style=\"font-size: small;\"><br \/>Bicyclists and pedestrians are the victims of reckless highway design,  accounting for 14% of all traffic related deaths.
