We\u2019ve been in\u00a0<strong>33 school districts so far<\/strong>\u00a0and over the next 2 years we\u2019ll be in\u00a0<strong>10-15 more.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Our work already reaches\u00a0<strong>over 10,000 kids a year<\/strong>\u00a0and we\u2019ll be reaching\u00a0<strong>around 4,500 more<\/strong>\u00a0<b>every single year\u00a0<\/b>with those new districts. <a title=\"Learning to Ride in Langley\" href=\"http:\/\/wabikes.org\/2013\/12\/04\/learning-to-ride-in-langley\/\">Our recent story on kids in Langley<\/a> illustrates the impact&#8211;and fun!&#8211;of this program.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s worth noting, however, that Washington has\u00a0<strong>295 school districts<\/strong>\u00a0and at the current rate of state funding it would take us\u00a0<strong>33 years\u00a0<\/strong>to get to all of them. We&#8217;ll be looking for ways to accelerate the pace so all of Washington&#8217;s kids have the opportunity, not just some.<\/p>\n<p><strong>If you&#8217;d like your school district to bring this curriculum to town,<\/strong>\u00a0contact Seth Schromen-Wawrin, <a href=\"mailto:seth@wabikes.org\">Seth@WAbikes.org<\/a>. <a title=\"Bring Bike Safety Education to Your School District!\" href=\"http:\/\/wabikes.org\/2013\/11\/22\/bring-bike-safety-education-to-your-school-district\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>The application deadline for schools is being extended<\/strong><\/a> by the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction so there&#8217;s still some time to apply but you need to <strong>act now.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2><b>Working so that Washington bikes more safely<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>We\u2019ve led successful efforts to pass bike legislation\u00a0and improve public policy for nearly three decades.<\/p>\n<p>This year we\u2019re celebrating the <a title=\"Coming to a neighborhood near you: safe streets\" href=\"http:\/\/wabikes.org\/2013\/05\/17\/safe-streets\/\"><strong>successful passage of the Neighborhood Safe Streets Bill after 3 years of effort<\/strong><\/a> and we\u2019ve reactivated the <strong>Cooper Jones Bicycle Safety Committee<\/strong> at the Washington Traffic Safety Commission. Cooper&#8217;s dad David Jones of Spokane joined us for a meeting this fall, and Spokane City Councilman Jon Snyder&#8211;who serves on the WTSC&#8211;is helping make sure we get the committee rolling again.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_3962\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/wabikes.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/HB1045_Bill_Signing.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3962\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-3962\" alt=\"On May 16, 2013, supporters of better bicycling, walking, and neighborhood safety joined with Governor Inslee to sign HB 1045 into law\" src=\"http:\/\/wabikes.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/HB1045_Bill_Signing-300x242.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"242\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-3962\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">On May 16, 2013, WA Bikes executive director Barb Chamberlain (right) and other supporters of better bicycling, walking, and neighborhood safety joined with Governor Inslee to sign HB 1045 into law<\/p><\/div>\n<p>We&#8217;re working now in <strong>Cowlitz County<\/strong> to provide technical assistance and community engagement to support adoption and implementation of the Neighborhood Safe Streets Law. We&#8217;re in discussions with other counties about similar work and look forward to seeing the law adopted widely.<\/p>\n<p><strong>If you&#8217;d like to see your town use this tool to lower speed limits in your neighborhood,<\/strong>\u00a0contact Josh Miller, <a href=\"mailto:josh@wabikes.org\">Josh@WAbikes.org<\/a>. We can work with you to identify potential funding sources for the expertise and effort it will take to ensure this works well for your town.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Helping local advocates work for better bicycling<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Last year our successes included fighting rumble strips on <strong>Vashon Island<\/strong> and getting a safety fix on the <a title=\"January Construction Update: Hood Canal Bridge Bicycle Safety Improvements\" href=\"http:\/\/wabikes.org\/2013\/01\/18\/january-construction-update-hood-canal-bridge-bicycle-safety-improvements\/\"><strong>Hood Canal Bridge.<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This year we&#8217;ve been working with <strong>Kitsap County<\/strong> advocates on a roundabout design issue and concerns about the effects of stormwater regulations on the ability to construct bike lanes and pave road shoulders. We highlighted projects on rides with elected officials on the <a title=\"Anacortes Wants The Guemes Channel Trail!\" href=\"http:\/\/wabikes.org\/2013\/08\/29\/anacortes-wants-the-guemes-channel-trail\/\">Guemes Channel Trail in <strong>Anacortes<\/strong><\/a> and the <a title=\"Complete the Lower River Road Trail in Vancouver\" href=\"http:\/\/wabikes.org\/2013\/08\/21\/complete-the-lower-river-road-trail\/\">Lower River Road Trail in <strong>Vancouver<\/strong><\/a>. We\u2019re working with leaders in <strong>Wenatchee<\/strong> and <strong>Pullman<\/strong> on some exciting ideas for new projects and partnerships and are proud of <a title=\"Anacortes Named Bicycle-Friendly Community\" href=\"http:\/\/wabikes.org\/2013\/10\/18\/anacortes-named-bicycle-friendly-community-2\/\"><strong>Anacortes<\/strong> for being the most recent addition<\/a> to the <a title=\"Bike-Friendly Washington\" href=\"http:\/\/wabikes.org\/growing-bicycling\/resources\/bike-friendly-washington\/\">list of Bicycle-Friendly Communities in Washington state<\/a> recognized by the <a title=\"League of American Bicyclists\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bikeleague.org\" target=\"_blank\">League of American Bicyclists.\u00a0<\/a><i><br \/>\n<\/i><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/wabikes.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/Spokane-BFC-Signage.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-5657\" alt=\"Bicycle-Friendly Community sign\" src=\"http:\/\/wabikes.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/Spokane-BFC-Signage-300x225.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a>Most recently <a title=\"Planning for a Bikeable, Walkable Spokane: Finding a Way Forward Together\" href=\"http:\/\/wabikes.org\/2013\/12\/10\/planning-for-a-bikeable-walkable-spokane-finding-a-way-forward-together-petition\/\">we&#8217;ve responded to the concerns raised by bike advocates in <strong>Spokane<\/strong> when the city announced it is eliminating its bike\/pedestrian coordinator position<\/a>. We&#8217;re hearing from city staff that they&#8217;re committed to a fully multimodal approach to transportation planning, which is very good news.<\/p>\n<p><strong>But we don&#8217;t take this for granted<\/strong>&#8211;this is an example of why advocacy organizations are needed to stay on top of the plans and follow-through of public agencies.<\/p>\n<p>In 2014 <strong>we&#8217;ll be adding a School and Family Programs Coordinator based in Spokane to serve eastern Washington.<\/strong> We have some grants and partnerships that make it possible for us to launch this exciting new initiative and look forward to growing our ability to deliver programs with the support of more and more members in the region.<\/p>\n<p><strong>If you&#8217;d like to connect us with issues in your town that others should know about,<\/strong> contact Louise McGrody, <a href=\"mailto:louise@wabikes.org\">Louise@WAbikes.org<\/a>. Scenic riding from Anacortes (shown here) to the Idaho border is yours to explore!<\/p><\/div>\n<p>This coming April we\u2019ll submit\u00a0<strong>the <a title=\"US Bicycle Route System in Washington\" href=\"http:\/\/wabikes.org\/growing-bicycling\/us-bicycle-route-system\/\">ve<\/a><a title=\"US Bicycle Route System in Washington\" href=\"http:\/\/wabikes.org\/growing-bicycling\/us-bicycle-route-system\/\">ry first US Bicycle Route in the state of Washington<\/a> for official approval<\/strong>\u2014<a title=\"More Progress Made on USBR 10\" href=\"http:\/\/wabikes.org\/2013\/09\/16\/usbr10-september-update\/\">USBR10 <\/a>across the northern tier\u2014and we have more routes to map and designate.<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019re also bringing out a <strong>new <a title=\"Pre-order your copy of Cycling Sojourner!\" href=\"http:\/\/wabikes.org\/pre-order-your-copy-of-cycling-sojourner\/\">Washington state bike tour guide<\/a><\/strong> next spring, C<i>ycling Sojourner,<\/i>\u00a0and we&#8217;ll be adding content to our site to grow as <a title=\"Destinations\" href=\"http:\/\/wabikes.org\/destinations\/\"><strong>the\u00a0<\/strong>source for information on great Washington state bike trips and destinations, from day trips and local adventures to multi-day or cross-state journeys<\/a>.<i>\u00a0<\/i>Whether your bike adventures are local or epic we\u2019re telling you about great routes and tours.<\/p>\n<p><strong>If you&#8217;d like to add your local insights about great places to ride, eat, drink, stay, shop, and enjoy to our site,<\/strong> contact Louise McGrody, <a href=\"mailto:louise@wabikes.org\">Louise@WAbikes.org<\/a>. We want blog posts, maps, videos, pictures&#8211;whatever showcases the best bicycling in Washington state.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>More investments in more comfortable, connected bicycling networks<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><strong>We\u2019ve worked successfully for\u00a0more funding for every type of bicycling project.<\/strong> We can celebrate because <a title=\"Taking Stock of the 2013 Washington Legislature: Part 1 \u2013 Victories and Thanks\" href=\"http:\/\/wabikes.org\/2013\/07\/22\/2013-washington-legislature-part-1\/\">in this year\u2019s legislative session investments in bike\/walk projects and trails came to\u00a0over $40 million for the \u00a0next two years<\/a>\u2014<b><b><\/b><b>an all-time high for state funding of our projects!<\/b><\/b><\/p>\n<p>At the same time it was a grueling year for legislative action.\u00a0<strong>Many thanks<\/strong> to everyone who showed up to speak up at the <a title=\"Make Your Voice Heard At the Washington State Senate Listening Sessions\" href=\"http:\/\/wabikes.org\/2013\/09\/05\/make-your-voice-heard\/\">10 Senate Transportation Listening Sessions held around the state<\/a>\u00a0this fall.<\/p>\n<p>We had voices at every session, <a title=\"Spokesman-Review op-ed on bicycling by Gage Stromberg\" href=\"http:\/\/www.spokesman.com\/stories\/2013\/sep\/29\/gage-stromberg-car-culture-cant-rule-the-road\/\" target=\"_blank\">a great op-ed piece in the Spokane Spokesman-Review by business owner Gage Stromberg<\/a>, and many emails, phone calls, and letters to your elected officials telling them that you as constituents, taxpayers, and voters believe in a more balanced approach to transportation investments in streets for all.<\/p>\n<p><strong>In 2014 we&#8217;ll keep up the effort and ask you to keep speaking up.<\/strong> We don&#8217;t know yet whether a transportation revenue package will be on the table&#8211;we&#8217;ve been in the discussions and negotiations that have been ongoing since June and will continue to be your voice.<\/p>\n<p><strong>If you aren&#8217;t receiving our Action Alerts and want to be in the loop,<\/strong>\u00a0use our <a title=\"Sign up to receive action alerts, legislative updates, and bike news from around Washington state\" href=\"http:\/\/wabikes.org\/act-now\/email-signup\/\" target=\"_blank\">e-mail sign-up form<\/a>\u00a0or\u00a0contact Elliott Bangs, <a href=\"mailto:elliott@wabikes.org\">Elliott@WAbikes.org<\/a>.
