{"id":5529,"date":"2013-11-19T16:06:36","date_gmt":"2013-11-20T00:06:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wabikes.org\/?p=5529"},"modified":"2013-11-19T16:06:36","modified_gmt":"2013-11-20T00:06:36","slug":"time-for-more-than-your-two-cents-worth-tell-olympia-washington-bikes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wabikes.org\/index.php\/2013\/11\/19\/time-for-more-than-your-two-cents-worth-tell-olympia-washington-bikes\/","title":{"rendered":"Time for (More Than) Your Two Cents\u2019 Worth\u2014Tell Olympia Washington Bikes!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>Earlier this month, we announced our new name: <\/b><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/bicyclealliance.org\/2013\/11\/03\/when-our-work-succeeds-washington-bikes-and-thats-our-new-name\/\">Washington Bikes<\/a>.<\/strong> It expresses our vision for the future&#8211;one in which <strong>more and more of Washington bikes every day.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>And while it looks like the state legislature is finally getting close to investing in our transportation system, current proposals don\u2019t go far enough to build the vision we all want.<\/p>\n<p><strong>That\u2019s why we need you to <a title=\"Washington State legislative district finder that lets you send a message to your elected representatives\" href=\"http:\/\/app.leg.wa.gov\/DistrictFinder\/\" target=\"_blank\">contact legislators now.<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_5530\" style=\"width: 296px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/wabikes.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/twocents.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5530\" class=\"size-full wp-image-5530\" alt=\"Two pennies out of every dollar simply isn't enough investment in biking, walking, and transit in the transportation revenue package being proposed by some Washington state legislators.\" src=\"http:\/\/wabikes.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/twocents.jpg\" width=\"286\" height=\"176\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-5530\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Not good enough!<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The proposed $12 billion package will spend less than 2%&#8211;two pennies out of a dollar!&#8211;on giving you and me alternatives to being stuck in traffic and spending our hard-earned dollars at the pump.<\/p>\n<p>Thursday the State Senate Transportation Committee will hear testimony on this $12 billion transportation proposal. <strong>Your legislators need to hear from you today that every day more and more of <i>Washington bikes, walks, and takes transit<\/i> and a balanced, sensible transportation package will invest accordingly.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This package will guide transportation investment over the next <strong>decade<\/strong>. Just some of the reasons we think two <strong>cents <\/strong>should instead be two <strong>dimes<\/strong>\u2014things you can tell your legislators about why they should dedicate 20% of the new funding to biking, walking, and transit:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Your needs:<\/strong> Rapid increases in the number of Washingtonians who can\u2019t, won\u2019t, or shouldn\u2019t drive alone, from youth to seniors, who need to get to school, work, a doctor\u2019s appointment or the grocery store.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Local interest:<\/strong> High demand from communities across the state for investments in bike\/walk projects for more comfortable connections that encourage healthy transportation and help create room on the streets for those who do need to drive.<\/li>\n<li><strong>State interest: <\/strong>At stake\u2014whether or not people and goods can get where they need to go (the person in the bike lane or bus next to you isn\u2019t in the car in front of you!) and whether our kids can walk and bike to school safely.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Add in the fact that bike\/walk projects actually <strong>create more jobs per dollar invested <\/strong>than traditional road projects (<a title=\"Pedestrian and Bicycle Infrastructure: A National Study of Employment Impacts, Political Economy Research Institute, University of Massachusetts (PDF)\" href=\"http:\/\/www.peri.umass.edu\/fileadmin\/pdf\/published_study\/PERI_ABikes_June2011.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">40%-50% more, one study found<\/a>), and we think this approach is smart for all of Washington.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_5531\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/wabikes.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/twodimes.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5531\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-5531\" alt=\"Two dimes--20% of the transportation revenue package should be invested in biking, walking, and transit. Get people moving and keep them moving with healthy, active transportation that takes cars off the road!\" src=\"http:\/\/wabikes.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/twodimes-300x146.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"146\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wabikes.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/twodimes-300x146.jpg 300w, https:\/\/wabikes.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/twodimes.jpg 321w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-5531\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Brother, can you spare two dimes? (You&#8217;ll earn them back&#8211;and then some&#8211;on increased real estate value, reduced congestion and air\/water pollution, better health, and jobs created.)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>With this one action you can help make the air cleaner, create living-wage jobs, and expand mobility for people without access to reliable transportation.<\/p>\n<p>Contact your legislators and the Governor to tell them that you need their support <strong>right now<\/strong> for the <strong>right package<\/strong>.
