Steve and I recently spent some time in Bend, Oregon to ski Mount Bachelor.\u00a0 We also brought our bikes along so we could better explore the community. \u00a0Good move.<\/span><\/p>\n

Bend\u00a0is a magnet for outdoor enthusiasts.\u00a0 This central Oregon community\u00a0sits in the shadows of Mount Bachelor and The Sisters\u00a0on a high desert plateau.\u00a0 The region offers\u00a0opportunities for skiing, snowshoeing, desert and mountain hiking, kayaking, and lots of mountain and road biking.<\/span><\/div>\n
What impressed me, tho, was the level of everyday biking I observed in town.\u00a0 I saw lots of folks on bikes!\u00a0 I saw residents biking to work and kids biking to school.\u00a0 I saw shoppers carrying their goods in baskets.\u00a0 I saw college students on bikes.\u00a0 I watched kids arrive at the library and community center on bikes.\u00a0 I saw patrons arriving and departing on bikes at brew pubs.<\/span><\/div>\n\n\n\n\n

Overall, we felt welcomed as a bicyclists.\u00a0 Bike parking was everywhere.\u00a0 Bike racks are easy to find in downtown Bend and they have a bike corral.\u00a0 We found bike parking at the library, parks, pubs and shopping centers.\u00a0 We saw a number of artistic bike racks too.<\/span><\/div>\n

You can even ride the Cyclepub–a rolling pub–on the streets of Bend.<\/span><\/p>\n

Bend has a pretty decent network of bike lanes and a nice mix of paved and soft surface trails.\u00a0 We even encountered a grade-separated bike lane.\u00a0 The city has also installed over a dozen roundabouts, many of which display public art.<\/span><\/div>\n

The one thing that\u00a0we missed as a bicyclists was a local bike map.\u00a0 As visitors,\u00a0we really could have benefited from a bike map showing\u00a0us where bike lanes and trails were located and offering some suggested routes.\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
