{"id":3952,"date":"2013-05-17T10:20:08","date_gmt":"2013-05-17T17:20:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wabikes.org\/?p=3952"},"modified":"2013-05-17T10:40:29","modified_gmt":"2013-05-17T17:40:29","slug":"safe-streets","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wabikes.org\/index.php\/2013\/05\/17\/safe-streets\/","title":{"rendered":"Coming to a neighborhood near you: safe streets"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Yesterday afternoon Governor Jay Inslee signed <a href=\"http:\/\/apps.leg.wa.gov\/billinfo\/summary.aspx?bill=1045\">HB 1045<\/a>, the <a href=\"http:\/\/wabikes.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/BicycleAllianceofWA_Neighborhood-Safe-Streets-Bill-Fact-Sheet_Jan20131.pdf\">Neighborhood Safe Streets Bill<\/a>, into law. Governor Inslee&#8217;s bill action represents the end of a three year legislative odyssey\u00a0for Washington Bikes, our legislative champions, and the countless organizations and cities that supported common-sense legislation to give cities and towns an easier pathway to make safe streets.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_3962\" style=\"width: 685px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/wabikes.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/HB1045_Bill_Signing.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3962\" class=\" wp-image-3962   \" alt=\"On May 16 supporters joined with Governor Inslee to sign HB 1045 into law\" src=\"http:\/\/wabikes.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/HB1045_Bill_Signing-1024x828.jpg\" width=\"675\" height=\"547\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-3962\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">On May 16 supporters joined with Governor Inslee to sign HB 1045 into law<\/p><\/div>\n<p>A law is only as good as its implementation and even with special session far from over, we&#8217;re gearing up for developing tools for making sure cities and towns have the tools and understanding to use it effectively to create safe streets.<\/p>\n<p>Initial applications for using the law to create safe streets include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"line-height: 13px;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/seattlegreenways.org\/who-we-are\/what-are-greenways\/\">Neighborhood greenways<\/a> &#8211; low stress neighborhood routes for people to walk and bike on their way to school, the store, or home. Current best practices call for speed maximums of 20 miles per hour or lower.<\/span><\/li>\n<li>Neighborhood connections around schools. School safety zones are narrow in their reach. Expanded 20 mile per hour streets in neighborhoods &#8211; with appropriate traffic calming designs &#8211; could make it easier for kids and families to walk and bike to school.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nyc.gov\/html\/dot\/html\/about\/slowzones.shtml\">Neighborhood slow zones<\/a> &#8211; New York City has led the way in taking a data-driven approach to applying 20 mile per hour streets in neighborhoods to reduce the severity of crashes, discourage cut-through traffic and diminish traffic noise.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If you have questions or want to talk more about how your city and town can use this law after it becomes effective (on July 28, 2013), <a href=\"http:\/\/wabikes.org\/contact-us\/\">contact Blake Trask<\/a> at the Bicycle Alliance.<\/p>\n<p>In the meantime, special session continues!
