{"id":22733,"date":"2020-11-12T13:31:06","date_gmt":"2020-11-12T21:31:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wabikes.org\/?p=22733"},"modified":"2020-12-17T13:52:37","modified_gmt":"2020-12-17T21:52:37","slug":"washington-bikes-2020-general-election-outcomes-big-wins-for-people-who-bike","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wabikes.org\/index.php\/2020\/11\/12\/washington-bikes-2020-general-election-outcomes-big-wins-for-people-who-bike\/","title":{"rendered":"Washington Bikes 2020 General Election Outcomes + Announcing our 2021 Legislative Agenda"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Washington Bikes is excited to begin collaborating with newly elected and re-elected public leaders to build connected and safe bike\/walk routes that get people where they need to go, and advance policies that make our streets safer for all.<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Last week, Washington voters turned out in force, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.seattletimes.com\/seattle-news\/politics\/washington-voter-turnout-in-2020-is-on-pace-to-set-record-elections-officials-say\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">breaking records for the most turnout ever<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the state. Almost all of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/wabikes.org\/2020\/10\/02\/washington-bikes-vote-for-these-bike-friendly-candidates-and-ballot-measures-by-nov-3\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Washington Bikes\u2019 endorsed candidates<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> won their race, securing seats in elected office to work towards our shared goals of safer biking, walking, and rolling. Voters demonstrated overwhelming support for local transportation investment ballot measures and elected officials who support healthier and safer communities through better bicycling.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your continued support and engagement with Washington Bikes and voting on Election Day made these election wins possible. We plan to work with these new and re-elected leaders starting from their first day in office, and holding them accountable to commitments to safe biking and walking infrastructure, active transportation funding, and support for bike tourism in order to secure our endorsement.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Thank you for making your voice, in support of safe biking and walking, heard at the ballot box!\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Election night impacts:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Seattle and Bellingham, voters overwhelmingly chose to approve ballot measures that raise money for increased transit service and bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure improvements.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the executive level in Washington, we look forward to continuing to partner with Governor Jay Inslee on transportation priorities and with Public Lands Commissioner Hilary Franz on outdoor recreation and trail-related priorities.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">85 percent of the bipartisan slate of state legislative elected officials who have championed WA Bikes\u2019 priorities in recent years will return to Olympia this coming session.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Washington Bikes endorsed Senator-elect T\u2019wina Nobles will soon represent the 28th legislative district (Lakewood, University Place, JBLM). This election is notable as the 28th senate seat has been held by a Republican since the 1960s. Additionally, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.king5.com\/article\/news\/politics\/elections\/challenger-twina-nobles-holds-slim-lead-in-28th-district-senate-race\/281-0fb14ad9-31a8-4a91-ab12-b60b14913ebb\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Senator-elect Nobles will be the only Black member of the Washington State Senate, and the first Black member of the Senate elected since 2010<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thank you to all of the elected officials and candidates who chose to run for office in a truly unique, maybe once in a lifetime, type of campaign cycle. The real work starts now. Washington Bikes is excited to begin collaborating with newly elected and re-elected public leaders to build connected and safe bike\/walk routes that get people where they need to go and advance policies that make our streets safer for all.
