{"id":1784,"date":"2013-01-14T15:49:37","date_gmt":"2013-01-14T23:49:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wabikes.org\/?p=1784"},"modified":"2013-01-18T07:24:08","modified_gmt":"2013-01-18T15:24:08","slug":"transportation-advocacy-day-2013-lets-make-it-bigger-than-ever","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wabikes.org\/index.php\/2013\/01\/14\/transportation-advocacy-day-2013-lets-make-it-bigger-than-ever\/","title":{"rendered":"Transportation Advocacy Day 2013: Let\u2019s Make it Bigger Than Ever!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Last year\u2019s record turnout of over two hundred dedicated advocates for biking, walking, transit, and rail provided a critical voice to help us advance an agenda that led to increased state funding for Safe Routes to Schools and more flexible design standards for cities and towns as they work to grow bicycling and make it safer.<\/p>\n<p>This year we want to make <a title=\"Sign Up for TAD 2013!\" href=\"http:\/\/t4washington.org\/2013-Transportation-Advocacy-Day\/?rp=001A000000oa60Y\">Transportation Advocacy Day 2013<\/a> bigger because bigger means more stories, more voices, and more testimony to grow bicycling statewide, to make it safer for kids to walk and bike, and to create great neighborhoods across Washington.<a href=\"http:\/\/wabikes.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/lobbyday.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-1786\" title=\"lobby day\" src=\"http:\/\/wabikes.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/lobbyday-300x266.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"266\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wabikes.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/lobbyday-300x266.jpg 300w, https:\/\/wabikes.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/lobbyday.jpg 631w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>No matter how many white papers, statistics, and reports we reference to promote our policies to legislators, invariably, it\u2019s the story that matters most. Your voice is critical in making the case for:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>why kids need sidewalks, trails, and bike lanes to safely get to school \u2013 while saving our state money with reduced busing costs<\/li>\n<li>safer neighborhood streets for children, elderly, and everyone else to live, work, and play<\/li>\n<li>more recreational opportunities for bicyclists that lead to more money spent in cities and towns across the state<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Transportation Advocacy Day is your opportunity in 2013 to connect with fellow advocates from across the state and to meet with your elected officials in Olympia on the issues we care about. Plus, it\u2019s a lot of fun!<\/p>\n<p>To register, visit <a title=\"Sign Up for TAD 2013!\" href=\"http:\/\/t4washington.org\/2013-Transportation-Advocacy-Day\/?rp=001A000000oa60Y\" target=\"_blank\">Transportation for Washington&#8217;s RSVP page<\/a>. There are many transportation options to get to Olympia, including Zipcar and rail. During the sign-up process, we\u2019ll work to help your travel go as smooth as possible. Also, the entire day (food, scheduling, great workshops) is free!<\/p>\n<p>Staff and dedicated volunteers from over ten organizations representing biking, walking, transit, rail, and public health are coordinating events and the policy agenda for the 2013 event. Luckily, the Transportation Advocacy Day platform is very similar to the <a title=\"BAW 2013 Legislative Agenda\" href=\"http:\/\/wabikes.org\/2012\/12\/11\/2013-legislative-update-agenda-safety-schools-and-growing-bicycling-statewide\/\" target=\"_blank\">Washington Bikes legislative agenda<\/a> and includes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Local Government Control and Safe Neighborhood Streets<\/strong>. The Bicycle Alliance again will lead the Neighborhood Safe Streets Bill to make safer streets and neighborhoods by allowing cities and towns the authority to set speed limits to 20 miles per hour on non-arterial streets.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Adding Health as a State Transportation System Policy Goal<\/strong>. The Bicycle Alliance will again support legislation that adds human health to the policy goals of our state transportation system \u2014alongside existing goals such as economic vitality, mobility, and the environment.<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/t4washington.org\/\">Transportation for Washington\u2019s Campaign<\/a><\/strong> to expand funding to give Washingtonians the freedom to get around, safer streets for our children, and more complete streets for our towns and cities.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Washington Bikes is excited to again collaborate with many different transportation interests and we can\u2019t thank our dedicated volunteers, including Washington Bikes board member Bob Duffy who coordinates the facility logistics and makes participants\u2019 experiences enjoyable with copious refreshments and lunch. His yeoman&#8217;s work goes back years when we hosted Bicycle Advocacy Day in Olympia.<\/p>\n<p>If you haven&#8217;t met her already Transportation Advocacy Day will also be a great opportunity to meet Washington Bikes&#8217;s new Executive Director, Barb Chamberlain.
