Here\u2019s to riding into a future that is even brighter for 2020!<\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Washington is the #1 bike friendly state for 11 years running!<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-17105\" src=\"http:\/\/wabikes.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Bikefriendlystate-400x200.png\" alt=\"Bicyclist on a trail in Washington\" width=\"400\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wabikes.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Bikefriendlystate-400x200.png 400w, https:\/\/wabikes.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Bikefriendlystate.png 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The League of American Bicyclists has released their ranking of bike friendly states, and for the 11th year in a row, Washington <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/wabikes.org\/2019\/12\/03\/washington-remains-1-bike-friendly-state-country\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">clinched the top spot<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. With improvements to safe passing laws, statewide Active Transportation plans, and investments in safe and accessible infrastructure, we are working to ensure that Washington remains the best place for people who bike!<\/span><\/p>\n<p>2.\u00a0<strong>The East Lake Sammamish Trail is finalized after decades of advocacy<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-17106\" src=\"http:\/\/wabikes.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/ELST-400x200.png\" alt=\"Bikes and families sharin the East Lake Sammamish Trail\" width=\"400\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wabikes.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/ELST-400x200.png 400w, https:\/\/wabikes.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/ELST.png 512w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After decades of advocacy, the East Lake Sammamish Trail <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cascade.org\/blog\/2019\/11\/victory-were-delivering-20-year-vision-finish-east-lake-sammamish-trail\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is being completed<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">! For people who walk, bike, and roll, the completed East Lake Sammamish Trail provides a safe and connected path through the East Side, and marks the realization of a 20 year vision. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>3.\u00a0<strong>Our c3 affiliate Cascade Bicycle Club hosted the largest cycling event in the nation.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-17107\" src=\"http:\/\/wabikes.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/tunnell-400x200.png\" alt=\"People on bikes ride across the now-defunct SR 99 tunnel with the Seattle Ferris Wheel in the background\" width=\"400\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wabikes.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/tunnell-400x200.png 400w, https:\/\/wabikes.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/tunnell.png 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In February 2019, Cascade hosted the largest cycling event in the nation, with 12,095 riders participating in the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cascade.org\/rides-and-events-major-rides\/tunnel-ride\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">one time Tunnel Ride<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This ride was the first chance for folks to ride the new SR99 Tunnel and the last chance to ride the Alaskan Way Viaduct! <\/span><\/p>\n<p>4.\u00a0<strong>Seattle\u2019s Fremont bridge zooms past 1 million bike trips<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-17108\" src=\"http:\/\/wabikes.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/fremontbridge-400x200.png\" alt=\"A woman rides across the Fremont Bridge\" width=\"400\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wabikes.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/fremontbridge-400x200.png 400w, https:\/\/wabikes.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/fremontbridge.png 512w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This year, the Fremont bridge saw the highest yearly bike ridership count ever! Over a million people biked over the Fremont Bridge before Halloween, and the numbers have steadily grown since. This new record points to a larger trend in Seattle &#8211; there are consistently more people on bikes! <\/span><\/p>\n<p>5.\u00a0<strong>Historic investment in trails: $810 million over the next 6 years.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-17109\" src=\"http:\/\/wabikes.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/prop1-400x200.png\" alt=\"Girl and mom biking on a trail during the fall\" width=\"400\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wabikes.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/prop1-400x200.png 400w, https:\/\/wabikes.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/prop1.png 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This election cycle, a supermajority of voters in King County <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cascade.org\/blog\/2019\/08\/realizing-game-changing-trail-connectivity-king-county\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">approved a milestone funding package<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for trails. This funding will go towards trail connections on the Eastrail, Lake to Sound Trail, and local connectors across the county! <\/span><\/p>\n<p>6.\u00a0<strong>New Safe Passing Law to keep people on bikes safer<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-17110\" src=\"http:\/\/wabikes.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/safepassing-400x209.jpg\" alt=\"Safe Passing Law Illustration - give 3 feet or a full lane to pass a vulnerable road user\" width=\"400\" height=\"209\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wabikes.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/safepassing-400x209.jpg 400w, https:\/\/wabikes.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/safepassing.jpg 768w, https:\/\/wabikes.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/safepassing-700x366.jpg 700w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During the 2019 legislative session, Washington Bikes led the effort to pass legislation protecting the rights of people biking, walking, and rolling throughout the state. This resulted in the passage of the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/wabikes.org\/2019\/04\/08\/break-whats-included-washington-bikes-2019-priority-legislation-vulnerable-roadway-user-vru-safe-passing-bill\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vulnerable user\/Safe passing legislation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">! Right: The South Sector Project Map<\/em><\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Earlier this year, advocates in Seattle <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cascade.org\/blog\/2019\/04\/few-tweaks-bike-master-plan-and-we-can-connect-seattle\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">made a stand<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to reinstate Southeast Seattle plans for bike infrastructure. Because of advocates\u2019 tireless efforts, during the 2019 budget session Seattle City Council set aside $10 million for a bike connection to Southeast Seattle. Advocates also ensured that SDOT expedited construction of vital downtown routes, connecting the area by bike and providing a center for larger Connect Seattle goals.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>8.\u00a0<strong>Seattle speed limits lower to 25 mph to advance Vision Zero goals<\/strong><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_17111\" style=\"width: 410px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-17111\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-17111\" src=\"http:\/\/wabikes.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/visionzero-400x214.gif\" alt=\"A graphic showing that 9 out of 10 people will survive a collision with a car going 20mph, while only two out of 10 people will survive a collission with a car going 40mph \" width=\"400\" height=\"214\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-17111\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Image courtesy of San Francisco MTA Vision Zero Action Plan, February 2015<\/em><\/p><\/div>\n<p>In keeping with a public commitment to reduce traffic deaths in the city, Seattle is lowering the speed limits on all city streets to 25 mph. This change comes from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ite.org\/technical-resources\/topics\/speed-management-for-safety\/speed-as-a-safety-problem\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">data that suggests<\/span><\/a> that on roads where speeds dropped to 25 mph, there was a 35% reduction in crashes. This is a crucial step in Seattle achieving its Vision Zero goals.<\/p>\n<p>9. <strong>Eighteen\u00a0communities across Washington renew or update their Bike Friendly status<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-17112\" src=\"http:\/\/wabikes.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/BicycleFriendlyAmerica-400x160.png\" alt=\"Bicycle Friendly America logo\" width=\"400\" height=\"160\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wabikes.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/BicycleFriendlyAmerica-400x160.png 400w, https:\/\/wabikes.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/BicycleFriendlyAmerica-768x308.png 768w, https:\/\/wabikes.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/BicycleFriendlyAmerica-700x280.png 700w, https:\/\/wabikes.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/BicycleFriendlyAmerica.png 1600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From Spokane to Port Angeles to Ellensburg, communities across Washington continued to prove their commitment to making life better for people who bike. In 2019 these bike friendly communities implemented bike infrastructure, Vision Zero policies, and public education to make biking safer, more accessible, and more fun to people across the state! <\/span><\/p>\n<p>10.\u00a0<strong>Funding for the Beverly Bridge connects Washington by bike<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-17113\" src=\"http:\/\/wabikes.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/beverlybridge-400x266.png\" alt=\"Photo of the Beverly Bridge on the Palouse to Cascades Trail\" width=\"400\" height=\"266\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wabikes.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/beverlybridge-400x266.png 400w, https:\/\/wabikes.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/beverlybridge.png 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In April, the Washington State legislature approved funding to repair the Beverly Bridge. The previously closed bridge, which spans the Columbia River is a crucial link between the western half of the Palouse to Cascades Trail to the eastern half.
