Meanwhile, the <a href=\"http:\/\/wabikes.org\/2015\/05\/20\/washington-state-ride-silence-2015-voices-safety\/\">Ride of Silence takes places in several Washington towns<\/a> to highlight just how much we need more investment in safer streets, and we feature <a href=\"http:\/\/wabikes.org\/2015\/05\/12\/bike-clubs-youll-never-ride-alone\/\">local clubs<\/a> and the work under way to <a href=\"http:\/\/wabikes.org\/2015\/05\/14\/growing-bike-advocacy-yakima\/\">grow advocacy in Yakima<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>May&#8217;s fun bike challenges: National Bike Month, the National Bike Challenge, and <a href=\"http:\/\/wabikes.org\/growing-bicycling\/resources\/bike-month-challenges-in-washington-state\/\">commuter challenges around the state<\/a>, and a new idea from a Seattle rider: <a href=\"http:\/\/wabikes.org\/2015\/05\/31\/waveback-washington-make-first-month-friendly\/\">#WaveBackWA<\/a><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-15015\" src=\"http:\/\/wabikes.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/bike-counter-install-redmond-2015-400x300.jpg\" alt=\"Installation of a bicycle\/pedestrian counter, Redmond, WA, 2015. The <a href=\"http:\/\/wabikes.org\/2015\/06\/23\/statewide-bike-counter-network-growing\/\">state bike\/pedestrian counter network began to grow<\/a>, we helped a <a href=\"http:\/\/wabikes.org\/2015\/06\/16\/help-grassroots-citizens-group-make-bay-baker-trail-reality\/\">Whatcom County group reach out for support for a new trail.<\/a> We celebrated <a href=\"http:\/\/wabikes.org\/2015\/06\/10\/five-washington-communities-earn-bicycle-friendly-status\/\">five new Bicycle Friendly Communities, including the Jamestown S&#8217;Klallam as the first tribal government in the nation to be named\u00a0one,<\/a>\u00a0and <a href=\"http:\/\/wabikes.org\/2015\/06\/18\/makes-bicycle-friendly-community-washington-state\/\">looked at what it takes to be designated a BFC.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-15017 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/wabikes.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/WA-Kids-Say-We-Need-More-Safe-Routes-to-School.png\" alt=\"WA-Kids-Say-We-Need-More-Safe-Routes-to-School\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" \/>July:\u00a0<\/strong>The legislature finished a mere 176 days after it started (a new state record &#8212; the longest set of sessions in history). But we weren&#8217;t done making sure the <a href=\"http:\/\/wabikes.org\/2015\/07\/09\/legislatures-capital-budget-reaches-time-high-trails\/\">historic funding wins for trails<\/a> and equally <a href=\"http:\/\/wabikes.org\/2015\/07\/10\/wa-state-transportation-package-puts-biking-dollars-at-all-time-high\/\">historic funding levels for other bike\/walk projects <\/a>would turn into groundbreakings and ribbon-cuttings. <a href=\"http:\/\/wabikes.org\/2015\/07\/20\/governor-inslee-threatening-generation-opportunity-tell-stop\/\">The once-in-a-generation level of funding was threatened<\/a>; <a href=\"http:\/\/wabikes.org\/2015\/07\/23\/whats-stake-governor-inslee-cuts-historic-investments-biking-safety\/\">we showed what was at stake<\/a>; and <a href=\"http:\/\/wabikes.org\/2015\/07\/28\/washingtonians-spoke-up-for-biking-health-and-safety-and-governor-inslee-listened\/\">Washingtonians spoke up and we protected the funding<\/a>. Whew! (And here our policy director thought it was safe to go on vacation once the last special session ended&#8230;.)<\/p>\n<p><strong>August:\u00a0<\/strong>We continued to feature great local efforts to grow and improve bicycling, from <a href=\"http:\/\/wabikes.org\/2015\/08\/04\/creating-bicycle-friendly-ellensburg\/\">Ellensburg <\/a>(a new Bicycle Friendly Community) to <a href=\"http:\/\/wabikes.org\/2015\/08\/05\/kidical-mass-growing-washington\/\">Kidical Mass rides<\/a>. <a href=\"http:\/\/wabikes.org\/2015\/08\/13\/lets-move-seattle\/\">We encouraged Seattle voters to support a local levy<\/a> that would provide significant investments in better bicycling and safer streets. And in our biggest news of the year, <a href=\"http:\/\/wabikes.org\/2015\/08\/22\/washington-bikes-and-cascade-bicycle-club-announce-merger-discussion\/\">we announced publicly that the boards of Washington Bikes and Cascade Bicycle Club were discussing the possibility of merging.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-14373\" src=\"http:\/\/wabikes.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/Jerry-Baker.jpg\" alt=\"Jerry Baker\" width=\"296\" height=\"445\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wabikes.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/Jerry-Baker.jpg 296w, https:\/\/wabikes.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/Jerry-Baker-266x400.jpg 266w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 296px) 100vw, 296px\" \/>September:\u00a0<\/strong>We show the great work being done by <a href=\"http:\/\/wabikes.org\/2015\/09\/23\/vision-collaboration-make-bike-skills-101-a-success\/\">local advocates working with kids in Vancouver<\/a>, Congress works on the federal transportation bill (again) <a href=\"http:\/\/wabikes.org\/2015\/09\/10\/rep-rick-larsen-leads-house-protect-transportation-alternatives-funding\/\">with great leadership from Washington state<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/wabikes.org\/2015\/09\/17\/association-pedestrian-bicycle-professionals-names-barb-chamberlain-nonprofit-professional-year\/\">our ED wins a national award<\/a>, and in very sad and unexpected news <a href=\"http:\/\/wabikes.org\/2015\/09\/10\/remembering-jerry-baker\/\">Jerry Baker, one of our founders and an icon of bicycling in the greater Seattle area, dies.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>September&#8217;s fun bike challenge: <a href=\"http:\/\/wabikes.org\/2015\/09\/01\/30-days-biking-september-2015\/\">30 Days of Biking<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>October:\u00a0<\/strong>We encourage <a href=\"http:\/\/wabikes.org\/2015\/10\/30\/bring-bike-safety-education-to-your-schools\/\">schools to apply for Safe Routes to School curriculum grants<\/a>, enjoy the fact that <a href=\"http:\/\/wabikes.org\/2015\/10\/16\/so-does-100-million-make-colorado-the-best-state-for-biking\/\">Colorado&#8217;s governor is\u00a0trying to beat our historic funding levels<\/a> (that&#8217;s the kind of governor&#8217;s race everyone can love), encourage Seattle voters to <a href=\"http:\/\/wabikes.org\/2015\/10\/30\/its-up-to-you-seattle-voters\/\">vote\u00a0<strong>yes<\/strong> on the Move Seattle levy<\/a>, and provide an update on a critical issue that&#8217;s been heating up: public ownership of <a href=\"http:\/\/wabikes.org\/2015\/10\/07\/briefing-john-wayne-pioneer-trail\/\">the John Wayne Pioneer Trail<\/a>, which is a state park.\u00a0And just for fun, we href=\"http:\/\/wabikes.org\/2015\/12\/10\/two-new-willapa-hills-trail-bridges-now-open\/\">Lewis County<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/wabikes.org\/2015\/12\/08\/congress-passes-fast-act-and-representative-larsen-leads\/\">Congress actually passes a transportation bill<\/a>, we adopt <a href=\"http:\/\/wabikes.org\/2015\/12\/23\/2016-washington-bikes-legislative-agenda\/\">our 2016 legislative agenda<\/a> and, in a big finish to a year&#8217;s worth of bike advocacy, education, and outreach, <a href=\"http:\/\/wabikes.org\/2015\/12\/08\/%e2%80%8bcascade-bicycle-club-and-washington-bikes-merge-to-form-nations-largest-statewide-bicycle-nonprofit\/\">the boards of Washington Bikes and Cascade Bicycle Club vote to merge the two organizations<\/a>, forming the nation&#8217;s largest bike nonprofit.<\/p>\n<p>And that doesn&#8217;t even include all the bike travel posts, highlighted rides, and thoughts about bike culture and the joys of bicycling.
