Another in our series by Nancy Yu.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>We\u2019ve made our way south to the city of<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Auburn,_Washington\"> Auburn<\/a>\u00a0for a ride through Green River Valley. This route\u00a0tours\u00a0the towns of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.covingtonwa.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\">Covington<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ravensdale,_Washington\" target=\"_blank\">Ravensdale<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kanaskat,_Washington\" target=\"_blank\">Kanaskat<\/a>, and<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cumberland,_Washington\" target=\"_blank\"> Cumberland<\/a> to the Green River Gorge with a stop at the Black Diamond Bakery.<\/p>\n<p>We\u00a0exit the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.auburnwa.gov\/things_to_do\/parks_trails\/game_farm.htm\">Auburn Game Farm Park<\/a>\u00a0for the short climb up Riverwalk Dr SE to Auburn Way S; the main thoroughfare of town. The turn on M St SE takes us\u00a0over to the other\u00a0side of town on SE Auburn Black Diamond Rd.<\/p>\n<p>SE Green Valley Rd\u00a0follows along the Green River for\u00a07.3 flat miles through the Muckleshoot Prairie. This area is home to rich open agricultural farmlands, horse farms\/ranches, tree farms and goat farms.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/wabikes.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/yu-aubrun-green-river-ride-cornfields-400x300.jpg\" alt=\"yu-aubrun-green-river-ride-cornfields\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The short steep climb up 218th Ave SE takes us to SE Auburn Black Diamond Rd. The next 6+ miles on SE Auburn Black Diamond Rd and Kent Black Diamond Rd SE takes us through the wooded residential ranch and tract style neighborhoods towards Lake Meridian.<\/p>\n<p>We cross under WA-18 to Covington Way SE; this is the business\/shopping district of <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Covington,_Washington\">Covington <\/a>with the usual big box stores; Costco, Fred Meyer and the smaller chain stores\/restaurants-Safeway, Subway and of course Starbucks. SE Covington Sawyer Rd leads us through more wooded neighborhoods and small businesses.<\/p>\n<p>The turn on 216th Ave SE leads us through more austere neighborhoods near Lake Sawyer. The road goes thru three name changes as it exits the residential areas and enters the thick forests surrounding Lake Sawyer Regional Park.<\/p>\n<p>The 1.3 miles on Roberts Dr takes us\u00a0to the civic center area of\u00a0Black Diamond out to the other end at the red Farmers Market. The turn on 3rd Ave\/WA-169 continues through a short section of businesses, a\u00a0mobile home park and an industrial area near the edge of town.<\/p>\n<p>Maple Valley Black Diamond Rd SE leads us to the Four Corners in Maple Valley and Ken<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-14686 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/wabikes.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/green-river-trail-Yu-Bp-400x300.jpg\" alt=\"green-river-trail-Yu-Bp\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wabikes.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/green-river-trail-Yu-Bp-400x300.jpg 400w, https:\/\/wabikes.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/green-river-trail-Yu-Bp-700x525.jpg 700w, https:\/\/wabikes.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/green-river-trail-Yu-Bp.jpg 720w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/>t;\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0a\u00a0very busy area with\u00a0shopping centers and a business district. SE Kent Kangley\u00a0Rd\u00a0goes pass\u00a0the green forests of Danville Goergetown\u00a0Open Space and continues\u00a0out through Ravensdale Retreat\u00a0Nature Area.<\/p>\n<p>We head south on Retreat-Kanaskat\u00a0Rd; this road goes pass the lake front homes around Retreat Lake to the wooded areas out to the large energy substation. We cross the RR tracks on Cumberland Kanaskat\u00a0Rd and ride along the\u00a0Green River for a quick in and out through\u00a0the towns of Kanaskat\u00a0and Palmer. The road continues through the country with open meadows and acreage ranches and farmhouses to the next town &#8212;\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cumberland,_Washington\">Cumberland<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/wabikes.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/yu-greenriver-auburn-horses-400x300.jpg\" alt=\"yu-greenriver-auburn-horses\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We exit Cumberland on Veaszie\u00a0 Cumberland Rd SE; this road leads us out-of-town towards Deep Lake and to the rural countryside with open ranches, farm houses and agricultural fields.<\/p>\n<p>The stretch of road leading up to the climb up Stanridge Hill on SE 392nd St has phenomenal views of the iconic <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nps.gov\/mora\/index.htm\">Mount Rainier <\/a>sitting high as the backdrop to this gorgeous country setting!<\/p>\n<p>From WA-69 N\/264th Ave SE, we take Enumclaw Franklin Rd SE for the next 3.9 miles up to SE Green River Gorge Rd.\u00a0This is\u00a0beautiful\u00a0section of road with minimal to no traffic; it goes through the forests surrounding <a href=\"http:\/\/www.stateparks.com\/black_diamond_bridge.html\">Black Diamond Bridge State Park<\/a>,<a href=\"http:\/\/www.stateparks.com\/green_river_gorge.html\">Green River Gorge State Park<\/a> and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.palmercc.com\/Greenrivergorge.htm\">Green River Gorge<\/a>\u00a0Conservation Area. Take a moment to stop and view the deep Green River Gorge at the overpass area-it\u2019s a pretty awesome sight!<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/wabikes.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/yu-auburn-green-river-ride-400x300.jpg\" alt=\"yu-auburn-green-river-ride\" \/><\/p>\n<p>SE Green River Gorge Rd\/293rd Ave SE goes on for the next few miles and changes to SE Green River Gorge\/Franklin Howard Rd and Lawson St for the last 1.2 miles into Black Diamond. A little jog around town will take you to the <a href=\"http:\/\/blackdiamondbakery.com\/\">Historic Black Diamond Bakery <\/a>on Railroad Ave.<\/p>\n<p>Enumclaw\u00a0Black Diamond Rd SE\/WA-169 takes us to SE Green Valley Rd for the Green River crossing on 212th Way SE and to the short steep climb up Whitney Hill.<\/p>\n<p>SE 384th St takes us through the rural ranchlands\u00a0around\u00a0Muckleshoot Prairie; this road jogs along the edge of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.muckleshoot.nsn.us\/\">Muckleshoot Indian Reservation<\/a> with multiple name changes.<\/p>\n<p>For the return to the\u00a0Game Farm Park, we take\u00a0Auburn Way S to Riverwalk Dr SE and drop down to 29th St SE and R St SE.<\/p>\n<p>For dinner, we stayed in Auburn and went to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.yelp.com\/biz\/pho-dinh-auburn\">Pho Dinh Restaurant<\/a>for some Vietnamese beef and chicken noodle soup-it was all good!<\/p>\n<p>This route has a little bit of city and lots of\u00a0scenic roads with miles and miles of idyllic country landscapes. The majestic Mount Rainier is never too far away!<\/p>\n<p>Garmin Stats:<br \/>\n78.73 Miles with 3717\u2032 of elevation gain<br \/>\nMax elevation: 886\u2032<br \/>\nMax grade: 13%<br \/>\nTerrain: Rolling with a\u00a0few short steep climbs<\/p>\n<p>Weather: WONDERFUL!
