Bicyclists know the empowering feeling of \u201c<\/span>taking the lane<\/a>,\u201d asserting their\u00a0<\/span>legal right<\/a>to\u00a0ride on a street where motor vehicles normally reign supreme. Next month in Tacoma, that feeling will be widely available\u00a0to\u00a0everyone\u2014for four glorious hours!\u2014as people flock\u00a0to\u00a0Tacoma for the Sunday Parkways event known as\u00a0Downtown\u00a0t0Defiance.<\/span><\/p>\n

On Sunday, September 13 from 9am \u2013 1pm, the City of Tacoma and Metro Parks will host this 3rd<\/sup>-annual Open Streets event, opening up almost seven miles of roadways\u00a0to all forms of human-powered transportation. The course runs along the Foss Waterway and Commencement Bay waterfront areas, from south\u00a0downtown\u00a0near the Tacoma Dome\u00a0to\u00a0the end of the Ruston Way and the Waterwalk near Point\u00a0Defiance\u00a0Park. There will be additional activities in five parks along the route, including\u00a0lawn croquet, an obstacle course, a skateboard park, and food trucks.\u00a0The event is free\u00a0to\u00a0all members of the public, and the first 500 people\u00a0to\u00a0register at\u00a0DowntowntoDefiance.com<\/a>\u00a0will be entered\u00a0to\u00a0win a $100 gift certificate\u00a0to\u00a0a local business.<\/p>\n

Why you should go:<\/b><\/p>\n

  1. The scenery on the route is crazy beautiful.<\/b>\u00a0Seals (and sometimes orcas) frolic just offshore. The view of Mount Rainier from sea level is\u00a0insane<\/a>. Point Defiance\u00a0Park, just beyond the official course, is an urban old-growth forest with 5 miles of paved roadway and great views of the Sound. It\u2019s all gorgeous, even when it rains.<\/li>\n
  2. <\/b>The event is geared\u00a0toward all ages and abilities.\u00a0<\/b>This is a festive event that brings all kinds of people out into the streets, with people on feet, bikes, scooters, unicycles, wheelchairs, skateboards\u2014\u00a0any\u00a0 human-powered mode you can imagine! Participants are invited\u00a0to\u00a0join the course at any point along the route. You can jump in and out at your favorite spot, bike the full round-trip route, or just keep on going. An extended ride could take you around the 5-Mile Drive at Point\u00a0Defiance, over the Tacoma Narrows Bridge or on the ferry over\u00a0to\u00a0Vashon Island. You\u2019ve got options!\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/b>\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n
  3. <\/b>You can get there with transit.\u00a0<\/b>The\u00a0downtown\u00a0starting point\u00a0<\/b>is only blocks away from the Tacoma Dome Station transit center, with express buses arriving from Olympia, Seattle (downtown\u00a0and U-District), and places in between. The \u201cDefiance\u201d end of the course is accessible via the Vashon Island ferries.   4. Open Streets events raise public awareness of and enthusiasm for bicycling.<\/b>We should support them! (If you can\u2019t attend, you can always\u00a0make a donation<\/a>.) This is the only event of its kind in the South Sound region. Tacoma has an increasingly active bicycle culture including Kidical Mass and Velofemmes, an awesome Bike Swap, and a mayor who declared 2015 \u201cThe Year of the Bike.\u201d\u00a0Downtown\u00a0to\u00a0Defiance\u00a0is also a way of leveraging support for a proposed trail along the waterfront, which would increase safety and enjoyment for all users.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
