Yet bike advocates and Bicycle Alliance <a title=\"Become a Member of Washington Bikes\" href=\"http:\/\/wabikes.org\/support-us\/become-a-member\/\">members<\/a> and supporters can point with pride to the impact of our efforts and celebrate the foundation we\u2019ve laid together for even greater accomplishments in 2013. Watch this blog\u00a0for <a title=\"2013 Legislative Update &amp; Agenda: Safety, Schools, and Growing Bicycling Statewide\" href=\"http:\/\/wabikes.org\/2012\/12\/11\/2013-legislative-update-agenda-safety-schools-and-growing-bicycling-statewide\/\">progress reports<\/a> on these and other projects:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Our <strong>Neighborhood Safe Streets Bill<\/strong>, which would permit cities to lower the speed limit to 20mph without expensive and unnecessary engineering studies, made it through the state House of Representatives on a unanimous vote in the 2012 session. <strong>We\u2019re already working to ensure its passage into law in 2013<\/strong> and have legislative sponsors lined up in both House and Senate<strong>.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>We have championed <strong>Safe Routes to School funding<\/strong> successfully since its inception to make it safer for our kids to bike and walk to school. We\u2019ll be working in the upcoming session on new approaches to funding school transportation and to defend the win we had this summer when the governor&#8217;s advisory committee recommended using federal highway safety dollars to fund Safe Routes&#8211;for the first time ever.<\/li>\n<li>We started <strong>mapping the first segment of the US Bicycle Route System in Washington <\/strong>across the northern tier of the state with the help of local riders and clubs. \u00a0When approved the route will become part of the official highway manual\u2014biking will really be on the map!<\/li>\n<li>We\u2019re always <strong>educating people who drive, walk, or bike<\/strong> to make your interactions on the street safer. Click around our newly revamped <a title=\"Washington Bikes: The statewide bike advocacy nonprofit\" href=\"http:\/\/www.wabikes.org\" target=\"_blank\">website<\/a> for <a title=\"Washington State Bike Laws\" href=\"http:\/\/wabikes.org\/growing-bicycling\/washington-bike-laws\/\" target=\"_blank\">bike law links<\/a> and more.<\/li>\n<li><strong>We\u2019re at the table not only when laws are written but also when long-range policy plans are developed<\/strong> by every state entity with the word \u201ctransportation\u201d in its name. We&#8217;re working every day to shape a future vision that will treat bikes as mainstream transportation. <strong>In 2013 we\u2019ll be helping write the next update to the statewide traffic plan.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>We can\u2019t do any of this important work without the <a title=\"Love biking? As the year draws to a close we hope you\u2019ll make three bike-friendly resolutions for 2013:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Invite a friend<\/strong> <strong>to <a title=\"Washington Bikes: Online membership form\" href=\"http:\/\/wabikes.org\/index.php\/support-us\/become-a-member\/membership-form\/\" target=\"_blank\">join the Bicycle Alliance<\/a>.<\/strong> (You could send a link to this post along with your own list of reasons why being a member really matters.)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Get a <a title=\"Share the Road: Get your bike-friendly license plate and show bike pride even when you drive!\" href=\"http:\/\/wabikes.org\/support-us\/license-plates\/\" target=\"_blank\">Share the Road license plate<\/a><\/strong> if you don\u2019t already have one to show your bike pride even when you drive.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Reach a new biking goal<\/strong>, whether it\u2019s taking your first overnight bike camping trip, riding to work for the first time (or every workday all year round), or biking somewhere in Washington you\u2019ve never seen before.
