{"id":14099,"date":"2015-08-04T10:15:13","date_gmt":"2015-08-04T17:15:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wabikes.org\/?p=14099"},"modified":"2015-08-04T09:53:17","modified_gmt":"2015-08-04T16:53:17","slug":"creating-bicycle-friendly-ellensburg","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wabikes.org\/index.php\/2015\/08\/04\/creating-bicycle-friendly-ellensburg\/","title":{"rendered":"Creating a Bicycle Friendly Ellensburg"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">Today&#8217;s post was written by Ellensburg City Council Member Nancy Lillquist.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/wabikes.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Ellensburg-bike-rack.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-14109\" alt=\"Ellensburg bike rack\" src=\"http:\/\/wabikes.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Ellensburg-bike-rack-330x400.jpg\" width=\"330\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wabikes.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Ellensburg-bike-rack-330x400.jpg 330w, https:\/\/wabikes.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Ellensburg-bike-rack.jpg 503w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 330px) 100vw, 330px\" \/><\/a>Several years ago I was approached by a citizen who cycles with the suggestion that Ellensburg become an official Bicycle Friendly Community.\u00a0 After looking at the application form, which at first glance appeared somewhat daunting, I decided not to pursue it.\u00a0 Ellensburg citizens who cycle know we are friendly!\u00a0 Why would we need the label?<\/p>\n<p>Recently, I was approached again, this time by the Director of Tourism, Amy McGuffin.\u00a0 She was looking at survey data showing that many people visit our small (18,000 people), central Washington college town for the great cycling.\u00a0 She asked if I would help apply for the Bike Friendly designation as a way to promote cycling tourism.\u00a0 A \u201cstakeholders\u201d meeting and several phone calls later, we submitted our application (it really wasn\u2019t as difficult as I had imagined).\u00a0 We were rewarded this spring with a \u201cSilver\u201d level Bicycle Friendly Community designation from the League of American Bicyclists!<\/p>\n<p>Ellensburg is a naturally easy place to ride.\u00a0 Settled in the late 1800\u2019s, the City was platted in the traditional manner, with residential neighborhoods surrounding a central commercial center and a highly connected street network, making it easy to walk and bike in minutes to most services.\u00a0 Many students attending Central Washington University take advantage of the relatively gentle terrain to get around by bike.\u00a0 CWU has, over the years, created a large \u201cauto-free\u201d portion of campus.\u00a0 The semi-arid climate is generally sunny and dry, though the snow and wind deter less committed riders winter and spring. \u00a0The 2010 Census reports 17% of our citizens walk and 8% cycle to work in Ellensburg.<\/p>\n<p>The City of Ellensburg has been working for several years to make it even easier to bicycle around town. The City has focused on \u201cEngineering\u201d \u2013 providing infrastructure such as multi-use paths, bike lanes, and sharrows, including constructing segments of the John Wayne Trail reconnection and a path under I-90 connecting two parks. \u00a0In all, Ellensburg has 15 miles of off-street and 7.5 miles of on-street bicycle network.\u00a0 We have collaborated to place five custom bike racks designed by local artists in our downtown and to promote bike events.\u00a0 A large effort has gone towards updating our non-motorized transportation plan and subsequent changes to City Code including requirements for bike lanes on certain new streets and bike racks at new commercial developments.\u00a0 Our police department receives bike training and has a bike patrol.\u00a0 They also participate in helmet give-aways and share-the-road campaigns.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/wabikes.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Ellensburg-Trail-Underpass.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-14111\" style=\"border: 1px solid black;\" alt=\"Ellensburg Trail Underpass\" src=\"http:\/\/wabikes.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Ellensburg-Trail-Underpass.jpg\" width=\"655\" height=\"360\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wabikes.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Ellensburg-Trail-Underpass.jpg 655w, https:\/\/wabikes.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Ellensburg-Trail-Underpass-400x219.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 655px) 100vw, 655px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_14113\" style=\"width: 260px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/wabikes.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Ellensburg-Recycle-Shop-weekly-ride.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-14113\" class=\"size-full wp-image-14113\" alt=\"Recycle Shop weekly ride\" src=\"http:\/\/wabikes.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Ellensburg-Recycle-Shop-weekly-ride.jpg\" width=\"250\" height=\"250\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wabikes.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Ellensburg-Recycle-Shop-weekly-ride.jpg 250w, https:\/\/wabikes.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Ellensburg-Recycle-Shop-weekly-ride-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-14113\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Recycle Shop weekly ride<\/em><\/p><\/div>\n<p>Beyond City government, the Ellensburg community has provided encouragement through fun events such as the Manastash Metric bike race and Whiskey Dick triathalon, as well as informal weekly rides organized by the local Recycle Shop and Ellensburg Mountain Bike Alliance.\u00a0 The Ellensburg School District incorporates cycling into their fitness classes in middle and high school.\u00a0 Younger children can participate in bike-to-school events and bike rodeos.<\/p>\n<p>Ellensburg has a solid bike friendly base to build on, but there is always room for improvement.\u00a0 We hope to turn our Silver into Gold in 4 years by making improvements in all areas \u2013 engineering, enforcement, education and encouragement \u2013 making Ellensburg an even friendlier place to bike for citizens and visitors alike.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Today&#8217;s post was written by Ellensburg City Council Member Nancy Lillquist.
