The release of an <a href=\"http:\/\/wabikes.org\/2015\/01\/08\/bicycling-means-business-in-wa\/\">economic impact analysis that shows just <strong>how<\/strong> amazing bike tourism is<\/a> bears repeating. And the study came out in 2015 but looks back so we figure it&#8217;s news all over again.<\/p>\n<p>Recognizing the importance of the outdoor recreation sector to the state&#8217;s economy, in 2014 Governor Jay Inslee appointed a Blue Ribbon Task Force on Parks and Outdoor Recreation and named Washington Bikes executive director Barb Chamberlain as co-chair. One great conclusion? <a title=\"New Economic Analysis: Bicycling Means Business in Washington\" href=\"http:\/\/wabikes.org\/2015\/01\/08\/bicycling-means-business-in-wa\/\" target=\"_blank\">Bicycle riders spend $3.1 billion<\/a> across the state. <strong>It&#8217;s clear that Washington recreation means business and bikes are a big contributor.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>[Tweet &#8220;My #1 reason 2014 great for WA biking: 56K kids have bike\/walk know-how.&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p><strong>2) 41 school districts and 56,000 5th-8th graders reached by Washington Bikes Safe Routes to School trainings since 2010<\/strong>. Washington Bikes continues to grow trainings in partnership with the State Office of Superintendant of Public Instruction (OSPI), WSDOT, and Feet First. Our Bicycle and Pedestrian Safety Education Program\u00a0 has delivered training and materials to physical education teachers and is poised to grow by another eight school districts in the upcoming biennium &#8211; assuming the state legislature funds walking and biking in its 2015-17 budget. (We never assume; <a href=\"http:\/\/wabikes.org\/2014\/12\/08\/washington-bikes-legislative-2015-agenda\/\">SRTS is always on our legislative agenda.)<\/a><\/p>\n<p>[Tweet &#8220;My #1 reason 2014 great for WA biking: New advocates Yakima, Clarkston, more towns.&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p><strong>3) New advocacy groups and initiatives:<\/strong>\u00a0These new efforts join many great groups, from small committees to nonprofit organizations and bike clubs. If your organization isn&#8217;t on our <a title=\"Resources\" href=\"http:\/\/wabikes.org\/growing-bicycling\/resources\/\">list of bicycle and trail groups in Washington state<\/a>, let us know.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/wabikes.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/wpid-yakima-bikes-and-walks-night-bike-ride_forweb.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full aligncenter\" title=\"Yakima-Bikes-and-Walks-night-bike-ride_forweb.jpg\" alt=\"image\" src=\"http:\/\/wabikes.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/wpid-yakima-bikes-and-walks-night-bike-ride_forweb.jpg\" width=\"450\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.yakimabikesandwalks.org\/\"><strong>Yakima<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>Bikes and Walks<\/strong><\/a> got started, with immediate results in pushing for a bike master plan.<\/li>\n<li>Bicyclists in the\u00a0<strong>Clarkston<\/strong>\u00a0area have begun organizing for involvement in local planning efforts. <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.google.com\/site\/lcvbikeandped\/\" target=\"_blank\">https:\/\/sites.google.com\/site\/lcvbikeandped\/<\/a><\/li>\n<li>In\u00a0<strong>Pullman<\/strong>, the city responded to requests from bicyclists for more downtown bike racks by creating an ad hoc task force (which included WA Bikes board member Marie Dymkoski and other WA Bikes members such as Jaime Brush) to choose sites for the racks that were installed. Jaime then led the successful effort to add Pullman to the statewide bike count.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Colville<\/strong>\u00a0installed its first-ever bike racks in downtown, with <a href=\"http:\/\/colvelo.org\/\">ColVelo<\/a> ramping up efforts and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/pages\/Rotary-Club-of-Colville\/142395359116243\">Colville Rotary Club<\/a> active in working for better bicycling.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>[Tweet &#8220;My #1 reason 2014 great for WA biking: New Bicycle Friendly Communities, Businesses.&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p><strong>4) Bicycle Friendly Washington:<\/strong>\u00a0The list keeps growing in the #1 Bicycle Friendly State! In our first post we noted\u00a0<a title=\"It\u2019s Official: Greater Wenatchee Is Bicycle Friendly!\" href=\"http:\/\/wabikes.org\/2014\/12\/19\/official-greater-wenatchee-bicycle-friendly\/\">Greater Wenatchee<\/a>\u00a0because it&#8217;s (so far) unique in Washington as a multi-jurisdictional designation. But it&#8217;s not the only bicycle-friendly place. The standards set by the League of American Bicyclists provide a way for towns, businesses, and universities to learn what it takes to support bicycling and receive recognition for their efforts. In 2014:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<ul>\n<li><a title=\"Congrats to Sequim for Becoming a Bicycle Friendly Community!\" href=\"http:\/\/wabikes.org\/2014\/05\/15\/sequim-bicycle-friendly-community\/\"><strong>Sequim<\/strong>\u00a0named Bicycle-Friendly Community<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><a title=\"Recognizing Bicycle Friendly Washington\" href=\"http:\/\/wabikes.org\/2014\/10\/29\/recognizing-bicycle-friendly-washington\/\"><strong>University of Washington<\/strong>\u00a0attained Gold<\/a>\u00a0level Bicycle-Friendly University.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Bicycle Friendly Businesses<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Bronze Level<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pnl.gov\/\">Pacific Northwest National Laboratories,<\/a>\u00a0Richland, @PNNLabs<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Silver Level<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.corporesanopt.com\">Corpore Sano Physical Therapy<\/a>, Kenmore<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/wcog.org\">Whatcom Council of Governments,<\/a> Bellingham<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.greenielife.com\">Greenies<\/a>, Richland, @GreenieLife<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>[Tweet &#8220;My #1 reason 2014 great for WA biking: Bikeshare! @CyclePronto new, @WSUPullman Green Bike.&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p><strong><strong>5) Bikeshare launches in Seatle:<\/strong>\u00a0<\/strong>The second bikeshare system in the state launched in\u00a0Seattle\u00a0as <a title=\"Pronto Cycle Share - Seattle bikeshare\" href=\"https:\/\/www.prontocycleshare.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Cycle Pronto<\/a>. The second?! Yes; the first is at Washington State University in\u00a0Pullman. The 140 bikes in the\u00a0<a title=\"WSU Green Bike bikeshare system\" href=\"https:\/\/urec.wsu.edu\/green-bike\" target=\"_blank\">Green Bike system<\/a>\u00a0have been checked out over 74,000 times by over 15,000 unique users.<\/p>\n<p>[Tweet &#8220;My #1 reason 2014 great for WA biking: @NACTO guides in @WSDOT, @CityofSeattle, @SpokaneCity.&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p><strong>6) NACTO <a href=\"http:\/\/nacto.org\/cities-for-cycling\/design-guide\/\">Urban Bikeway<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/nacto.org\/usdg\/\">Street Design<\/a> Guides endorsed: <\/strong><strong>WSDOT, Spokane, Bellevue. In 2014 <\/strong><strong>WSDOT<\/strong> led the nation, making it the first state DOT to endorse the new Urban Street Design Guide and the Urban Bikeway Design Guide from the National Association of City Transportation Officials (NACTO). In December <a href=\"http:\/\/nacto.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/Spokane-WA_USDG-UBDG-Resolution.pdf\"><strong>Spokane<\/strong><\/a> adopted both the Urban Bikeway and Streets Design Guides. Also in early 2014, <a href=\"http:\/\/nacto.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Bellevue-WA-USDG-Endorsement-Letter-03-28-14.pdf\">Bellevue<\/a> adopted NACTO&#8217;s Urban Streets Design Guide. These most recent additions follow Seattle and <a href=\"http:\/\/nacto.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/Tacoma-USDG-Endorsement-Letter-12.3.2013.pdf\">Tacoma<\/a>&#8216;s endorsement of both guides in 2013. The first city in Washington state to endorse a NACTO Guide? That would be <a href=\"http:\/\/www.columbiabasinherald.com\/news\/article_6ddb1f72-5f10-11e1-9784-001871e3ce6c.html\">Moses Lake<\/a> in 2012.<\/p>\n<p>[Tweet &#8220;My #1 reason 2014 great for WA biking: Bike master plans in Bellingham, Seattle.&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p><strong>7) Bike master plans adopted or updated:<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>Seattle<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Bellingham<\/strong>. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.seattle.gov\/transportation\/bikemaster.htm\">Seattle adopted its update in early 2014 <\/a>recommending great connections for riders of all ages and abilities, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cob.org\/services\/planning\/transportation\/bike-master-planning.aspx\">Bellingham in October<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>[Tweet &#8220;My #1 reason 2014 great for WA biking: @CityofYakima starts 1st bike master plan. #bikeYAK&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p><strong>8) Bike master plan efforts initiated:<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>Yakima<\/strong>\u00a0(and the city has just selected a firm to develop the plan, with an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.yakimaherald.com\/opinion\/editorials\/2808767-8\/public-needs-to-have-say-in-yakimas-bicycle\">editorial in the Yakima Herald<\/a> calling for involvement of the bicycle community in the work).<\/p>\n<p>[Tweet &#8220;My #1 reason 2014 great for WA biking: @PierceCo adopts #completestreets ordinance.&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p><strong>9) Complete Streets ordinance adopted:<\/strong> <strong>Pierce County<\/strong>. <a href=\"http:\/\/wabikes.org\/2014\/08\/14\/pierce-county-adopts-complete-streets-ordinance\/\">Pierce County<\/a> adopted the ordinance, needed to be eligible for potential future grants from the state Complete Streets grant program that Washington Bikes helped get created by the legislature. When funded the grant program will provide incentives to cities to adapt their street design approach to take into account walking, biking, driving, taking transit, and moving freight.<\/p>\n<p>[Tweet &#8220;My #1 reason 2014 great for WA biking: Bike access to Hwy 167 protected w\/@WSDOT.&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p><strong>10) State Route 167 bike access protected:\u00a0 <\/strong>Washington Bikes worked with local advocates in the City of Pacific, as well as Cascade Bicycle Club, to engage the Washington State Department of Transportation on its SR 167 HOT Lane expansion project. Initial design proposals had WSDOT closing bicycle access to portions of SR 167 and potentially to adjoining state routes. With work between design staff, even including Secretary of Transportation Lynn Peterson, access for bicycles was retained and additional bicycle facilities will be included in the final project design.<\/p>\n<p>[Tweet &#8220;My #1 reason 2014 great for WA biking: Lots going on for trails! @railstotrails&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p><strong>11) Trail developments:<\/strong> So many great strides made we&#8217;re going to do a separate post just on these.<\/p>\n<p>Newest on our list to track: a potential\u00a0<strong>Colfax-Pullman Rail Trail.<\/strong> We worked with local advocate Karl Boehmke of the Pullman Civic Trust to provide policy analysis concerning a\u00a0federal court ruling. With our memo in hand\u00a0Karl changed the context of the discussion to keep the potential trail alive. Local elected officials considered our analysis that addressed the court decision, a railbanking option, and the value of bike tourism to the local economy.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Your Turn<\/strong><br \/>\nAre we <strong> still<\/strong> missing some major milestones?
