From there, a growing network of trails connects the Puget Sound region. The Cross-Kirkland Corridor, part of the Eastside Rail Corridor; Burke-Gilman Trail; East Lake Sammamish Trail; Interurban; Ship Canal; trail mileage continues to grow, inviting more and more people to ride to more places.<\/p>\n<p>With over 1,000 miles of rail-trails,\u00a0<a title=\"Trails and More #1 in Washington State: Bicycling By the Numbers\" href=\"http:\/\/wabikes.org\/2014\/12\/16\/trails-and-more-number-1-in-washington-state\/\">Washington is #1 in the nation for rail-trail miles<\/a>\u00a0and has the single longest such trail, the John Wayne Pioneer Trail.<\/p>\n<p>Trail projects keep rolling, from the <a title=\"Tacoma: Prairie Line Trail Ribbon-Cutting\" href=\"http:\/\/wabikes.org\/event-ride\/tacoma-prairie-line-trail-ribbon-cutting\/\">Prairie Line Trail in Tacoma<\/a>\u00a0to <a title=\"Bridging the Gap in Thurston County\" href=\"http:\/\/wabikes.org\/2014\/12\/14\/bridging-gap-thurston-county\/\">the final &#8220;Bridging the Gap&#8221; project in the Chehalis-Western Trail<\/a>\u00a0to the <a title=\"Olympic Discovery Trail: Car-Free Route Around Lake Crescent\" href=\"http:\/\/wabikes.org\/2014\/12\/08\/olympic-discovery-trail-car-free-route-around-lake-crescent\/\">Olympic Discovery Trail<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>[Tweet &#8220;Reason #9 WA biking rocks: Local advocates who show up, speak up, ride the talk.&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.5em;\">With support from Empire Health Foundation, <\/span><strong style=\"font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.5em;\">Washington Bikes opened an office in Spokane.<\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.5em;\"> We tripled the number of League of American Bicyclists Certified Instructors in the Inland Northwest by hosting a training, developed a network of PE teachers who collaborate to get kids biking, and piloted a Walking School Bus program (since kids walk before they ride) that will continue under the auspices of the Spokane Regional Health District.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.5em;\">Local advocates including members of Spokane Bicycle Club, Belles and Baskets, Swamp Ride, and others volunteer in our programs and with all the great bike events in the area. WA Bikes (then the Bicycle Alliance) helped found Bike to Work Spokane in 2007; advocacy in the region has grown steadily ever since.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Around Washington in 2014 more and more local people became bike leaders.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Seattle, Kirkland,<\/strong> and elsewhere: Activists started pushing for\u00a0<strong>Vision Zero<\/strong>\u00a0traffic safety measures to reduce fatalities to\u00a0<strong>zero<\/strong> for pedestrians and bicyclists.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Wenatchee:<\/strong>\u00a0Advocates energized the effort to get elected officials from five jurisdictions on board for the Bicycle-Friendly Community application and are working for the &#8220;Fruit Loop,&#8221; a proposed link between Wenatchee and Leavenworth.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Port Angeles and Clallam County:<\/strong>\u00a0A similar effort is under way for Bicycle Friendly status, with <a title=\"Port Angeles Likes Bikes on Facebook\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/PortAngelesLikesBikes\" target=\"_blank\">Port Angeles Likes Bikes<\/a> bringing people together.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Vancouver:<\/strong> BikeVanWa advocates for completion of critical trail segments and on-street improvements.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Pullman:<\/strong>\u00a0Advocates are hard at work on a number of fronts. This list doesn&#8217;t <strong>begin<\/strong> to capture everyone &#8212; it&#8217;s just a sampling of some of the people we&#8217;ve worked with over the past year:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Mayor Dan Rankin of Darrington<\/strong>, working for the Whitehorse Trail;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Mayor Carolyn Eslick of Sultan,<\/strong> who wants a bike\/pedestrian bridge over the Sultan River to link the two halves of her town to provide safe passage to residents and to attract bike tourism;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Spokane<\/strong> <strong>City Council Member<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>Jon Snyder,<\/strong> who serves on the Washington Traffic Safety Commission and helped us reestablish the Cooper Jones Safety Committee;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Senator Ann Rivers,\u00a0Representative Jim Moeller, Mayor Tim Leavitt, City Council Members Larry Smith and Bill Turlay<\/strong>, and the<strong>\u00a0Vancouver Port commission<\/strong>, all of whom want to see the <a title=\"Complete the Lower River Road Trail in Vancouver\" href=\"http:\/\/wabikes.org\/2013\/08\/21\/complete-the-lower-river-road-trail\/\">Lower River Road Trail completed;<\/a><\/li>\n<li><strong>US Senator Patty Murray,<\/strong> who got<a title=\"We Did It! Promoted as a series of lunchtime rides during Bike to Work Week, the challenge is available any time you want to download a map.
