We achieved<strong> record levels of funding for biking\/walking projects<\/strong>\u00a0in the 2013 biennial budget and <strong>a new all-time high in the 2015 biennial transportation budget, <a title=\"Legislature\u2019s Capital Budget Reaches All-Time High for Trails\" href=\"http:\/\/wabikes.org\/2015\/07\/09\/legislatures-capital-budget-reaches-time-high-trails\/\">capital budget<\/a>, and <a title=\"Washington State Transportation Package Puts Biking Dollars at All-Time High\" href=\"http:\/\/wabikes.org\/2015\/07\/10\/wa-state-transportation-package-puts-biking-dollars-at-all-time-high\/\">transportation revenue package<\/a><\/strong>. As a result of our work, people can bike and walk more safely and more comfortably in more places, all around the state.<\/p>\n<p>This list by region shows some of the results of our work over the course of 2013-2014 around the state. Projects funded are from the 2013 biennial budget; we fought hard and worked with our legislative champions to reach a new high in total funding for bicycle and pedestrian projects in Washington state. <i>This page will be updated with the 2015 budget information summer 2015.<\/i><\/p>\n<p>We also work with local leaders across the state. Here we list some of our connections with local advocates and communities for program and policy work around the state.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Note on counties listed in each region:<\/strong> We essentially follow the WSDOT regional divisions, although in some cases a county may appear in more than one WSDOT region and we list it in only one place below.<\/p>\n<h2>North Central Washington<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Bike\/Walk Funding 2013-2014: $5,384,545<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Counties:<\/strong> Okanogan, Chelan, Douglas, Grant<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>Quincy<\/strong> Valley K-7 path, <strong>Brewster\u2019s<\/strong> Ferry Street safety improvements, Okanagan and Red Apple Road pedestrian enhancements in <strong>Wenatchee<\/strong>, the Susie Stephens Trail Phase 2 in <strong>Winthrop<\/strong>, Rocky Reach Trail connection to <strong>Wenatchee\u2019s<\/strong> Apple Capital Loop Trail extension, and <strong>Omak<\/strong> Complete Streets project.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Working with Local Leaders So That Washington Bikes\u2014<\/strong>Our mapping of <a title=\"USBR10, Northern Washington State: Travel Washington by Bike\" href=\"http:\/\/wabikes.org\/growing-bicycling\/us-bicycle-route-system\/usbr10\/\">USBR10<\/a> took us to meetings with transportation planners and officials in <strong>Okanogan County<\/strong>. We met with a number of local advocates in <strong>Wenatchee<\/strong>, supported their efforts to turn people out on behalf of the bike master plan update, and talked with the publisher and editor of the <i>Wenatchee World<\/i> about the economic value of bicycling\u2014a message that showed up in their editorials in support of the plan. We also worked with WSDOT to get extra \u201cbikes on road\u201d signage for the 2013 Redspoke ride over <strong>Hwy. 2<\/strong> to improve event safety. We rallied people from throughout the region to testify on behalf of bicycling and walking investments at the <strong>Senate Transportation Listening Session<\/strong> held in <strong>Wenatchee <\/strong>Sept. 23, 2013.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Washington Bikes to Your Schools\u2014<\/strong>Around <b>2,300 middle-school students<\/b> learned to ride with confidence thanks to <a title=\"Safe Routes to School\" href=\"http:\/\/wabikes.org\/growing-bicycling\/srts\/\">our Safe Routes to School curriculum<\/a> in <strong>Brewster, Bridgeport, Moses Lake, Omak, Pateros, Quincy, <\/strong>and <strong>Wahluke<\/strong> school districts<b>.<\/b><\/p>\n<h2>Northwest Washington<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Bike\/Walk Funding 2013-2014: $7,002,680<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Counties:<\/strong> Whatcom, Skagit, San Juan, Island, Snohomish<\/p>\n<p>Bike Walk <strong>Mount Vernon<\/strong>; Carl Cozier Safe Routes project in <strong>Bellingham<\/strong>; Hawthorne Elementary Safe Routes and downtown streetscape in <strong>Everett<\/strong>; a <strong>Swinomish<\/strong> to <strong>La Conner<\/strong> Safe Routes project; SR9 pedestrian\/bike improvements in <strong>Sedro-Woolley<\/strong>; Safe Routes project and the Guemes Channel Trail in <strong>Anacortes<\/strong>; 15th St. SW, 238th St SW, SR 104, and Madron Elementary Walkway projects in <strong>Edmonds<\/strong>; Jim Kaemingk Sr. Trail Extension in <strong>Lynden<\/strong>; Cedarhome Elementary Safe Routes project in <strong>Stanwood<\/strong>; and Centennial Trail intersection improvements in <strong>Snohomish<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Working with Local Leaders So That Washington Bikes\u2014<\/strong>We met with <strong>Skagit County <\/strong>bike and transportation leaders about USBR10; supported the <strong>Anacortes <\/strong>application for Bicycle-Friendly Community status (congratulations on Bronze!); worked with<strong> Friends of the Guemes Channel Trail<\/strong> and <strong>Anacortes Parks Foundation<\/strong> to put together <a title=\"Anacortes Wants The Guemes Channel Trail!\" href=\"http:\/\/wabikes.org\/2013\/08\/29\/anacortes-wants-the-guemes-channel-trail\/\">an event in <strong>Anacortes<\/strong> with Cong. Rick Larsen and State Rep. Kris Lytton; <\/a>and began discussions with <a title=\"Bike Snohomish County\" href=\"http:\/\/wabikes.org\/destinations\/bike-snohomish-county\/\"><strong>Snohomish County <\/strong>leaders about better promotion of the great bike travel\/tourism opportunities<\/a>. We rallied people from throughout the region to testify on behalf of bicycling and walking investments at the <strong>Senate Transportation Listening Sessions<\/strong> held in <strong>Everett<\/strong> Sept. 18 and in <strong>Bellingham <\/strong>Oct. 15, 2013.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Washington Bikes to Your Schools\u2014<\/strong>Around <strong>3,100 middle-school students <\/strong>learned to ride with confidence thanks to our curriculum in the <strong>Anacortes, Lynden, Mount Vernon, Oak Harbor, Sedro-Woolley, <\/strong>and<strong> South Whidbey<\/strong> school districts.<\/p>\n<h2>Southwest Washington<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Bike\/Walk Funding 2013-2014: $1,483,638<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Counties:<\/strong> Pacific, Lewis, Cowlitz, Clark, Skamania, Klickitat<\/p>\n<p>Safe Walking Route project in <strong>Woodland<\/strong>, safety improvements in <strong>Battleground<\/strong>, Sacajawea Elementary safety improvements in <strong>Clark County,<\/strong> Endeavour Elementary Pathway in <strong>Vancouver<\/strong>, and Jemtegaard Trail improvements in <strong>Washougal<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Working with Local Leaders So That Washington Bikes\u2014<\/strong>We shared a booth at <strong>Vancouver\u2019s <\/strong>first-ever Sunday Streets Alive event with <strong>Bike Clark County<\/strong>; met with leaders of the Bicycle-Pedestrian Advisory Committee, Bike Clark County, and others to talk about how we can help grow bicycling and expand Safe Routes to School work; organized an event with legislators and local elected officials in <strong>Vancouver <\/strong>to highlight the need to complete the Lower River Loop Trail; and we\u2019re providing technical assistance in <strong>Cowlitz County<\/strong> with the goal of implementing the Neighborhood Safe Streets Bill we got passed this year for a <strong>\u201c20 Is Plenty\u201d <\/strong>approach. We rallied people from throughout the region to testify on behalf of bicycling and walking investments at the <strong>Senate Transportation Listening Session <\/strong>held in<strong> Vancouver <\/strong>Oct. 7.\u00a0<b><\/b><\/p>\n<p><strong>Washington Bikes to Your Schools\u2014<\/strong>Around <strong>1,200 middle-school students<\/strong> learned to ride with confidence thanks to our curriculum in the <strong>Castle Rock, Goldendale, Vancouver, <\/strong>and<strong> White Salmon<\/strong> school districts.<\/p>\n<h2>South Central Washington<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Bike\/Walk Funding 2013-2014:\u00a0$636,000<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Counties:<\/strong> Kittitas, Yakima, Benton, Franklin, Walla Walla, Columbia, Garfield, Asotin<\/p>\n<p>Improvements around the West Valley Middle School in <strong>Yakima<\/strong> and a sidewalk project in <strong>Ellensburg<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Working with Local Leaders So That Washington Bikes\u2014<\/strong>We met with over two dozen bike advocates in\u00a0<strong>Yakima;\u00a0<\/strong>worked with\u00a0<strong>3 Rivers Bicycle Coalition\u00a0<\/strong>in\u00a0<strong>Tri-Cities\u00a0<\/strong>so the National Bike Challenge included the local Bike to Work Week efforts, and attended the wrap-up celebration at Howard Amon Park in\u00a0<strong>Richland;\u00a0<\/strong>supported an application by the\u00a0<strong>Yakima River Canyon Scenic Byway\u00a0<\/strong>coalition to begin plans for a trail from\u00a0<strong>Ellensburg\u00a0<\/strong>to\u00a0<strong>Yakima;<\/strong>\u00a0and promoted the annual <a title=\"Ann Weatherill Cycling Classic\" href=\"http:\/\/wabikes.org\/event-ride\/ann-weatherill-cycling-classic-2\/\">Ann Weatherill Classic<\/a> in\u00a0<strong>Walla Walla.\u00a0<\/strong>We rallied people from throughout the region to testify on behalf of bicycling and walking investments at the\u00a0<strong>Senate Transportation Listening Sessions\u00a0<\/strong>held in\u00a0<strong>Yakima\u00a0Sept. 24 <\/strong>and\u00a0<strong>Pasco\u00a0<\/strong>Sept. 26.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Washington Bikes to Your Schools\u2014<\/strong>Around <strong>1,000 middle-school students<\/strong> learned to ride with confidence thanks to our curriculum in the <strong>Kiona-Benton, Pomeroy, Prescott, Waitsburg, <\/strong>and<strong> Zillah <\/strong>school districts.<\/p>\n<h2>Olympic Region<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Bike\/Walk Funding 2013-2014:\u00a0$13,026,778<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Counties:<\/strong> Clallam, Jefferson, Grays Harbor, Mason, Kitsap, Pierce, Thurston<\/p>\n<p>Safe Routes projects in <strong>University Place,<\/strong> Evergreen Elementary Safe Routes project in <strong>Shelton<\/strong>, improvements around schools in <strong>Puyallup<\/strong>, a sidewalk connector in <strong>Bremerton<\/strong>, the Foothills Trail Extension in <strong>Wilkeson<\/strong>, pedestrian\/bike safety improvements on SR99 in <strong>Fife<\/strong>, Complete Streets project in <strong>Quilcene<\/strong>, nonmotorized improvements on Olympic Drive in <strong>Bainbridge Island,<\/strong> a sidewalk project in <strong>Olympia<\/strong>, Seabrook Trail, and Point Defiance Missing Link in <strong>Tacoma<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Working with Local Leaders So That Washington Bikes\u2014<\/strong>We met with leaders from <strong>North Kitsap Trails Association, West Sound Cycling Club, <\/strong>and<strong> Squeaky Wheels <\/strong>in<strong> Poulsbo;<\/strong> celebrated with <strong>Port Townsend <\/strong>in May 2013 as they kicked off the \u201cStep On It!\u201d campaign to get kids on the move; dug into the details of stormwater regulations and what they mean for bike lanes and paved shoulders in <strong>Kitsap County; <\/strong>met with local bike leaders and Sen. Christine Rolfes about a roundabout design at the Agate Pass Bridge on <strong>Bainbridge Island<\/strong><b>; <\/b>and attended the Interagency Bike to Work Picnic in <strong>Olympia<\/strong><b>. <\/b>We rallied people from throughout the region to testify on behalf of bicycling and walking investments at the <strong>Senate Transportation Listening Session <\/strong>held in<strong> Tacoma <\/strong>Oct. 9.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Washington Bikes to Your Schools\u2014<\/strong>Around <strong>2,000 middle-school students<\/strong> learned to ride with confidence thanks to our curriculum in the <strong>Bainbridge Island, Eatonville, Port Angeles, <\/strong>and<strong> Port Townsend<\/strong> school districts. We also brought an adult bike program to <strong>Olympic College <\/strong>and<strong> Pierce College <\/strong>to inspire new riders in a new way.<\/p>\n<h2>Eastern Washington<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Bike\/Walk Funding 2013-2014:\u00a0$2,376,637<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Counties:<\/strong> Ferry, Stevens, Pend Oreille, Lincoln, Spokane, Whitman, Adams<\/p>\n<p>Safe Routes projects around Westview and Hamblen Elementary Schools in <strong>Spokane<\/strong>, nonmotorized improvements in <strong>Newport<\/strong> on SR2, and the <strong>Spokane River Centennial Trail<\/strong> Northwest Extension.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Working with Local Leaders So That Washington Bikes\u2014<\/strong>We met with leaders in <strong>Pullman <\/strong>about the potential for a rails-to-trails project between <strong>Colfax <\/strong>and<strong> Pullman;<\/strong> landed a grant that means we\u2019ll be working with PE teachers in 2014 in <strong>Ferry, Pend Oreille, <\/strong>and<strong> Stevens Counties<\/strong> to get kids walking and rolling; connected with leaders in <strong>Colville <\/strong>and<strong> Newport <\/strong>about the future USBR10; and worked with advocates in <strong>Spokane <\/strong>concerned about the elimination of the city\u2019s bike\/pedestrian coordinator position.
