{"id":11,"date":"2012-09-19T08:10:01","date_gmt":"2012-09-19T08:10:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wabikes.org\/?page_id=11"},"modified":"2022-07-01T10:19:04","modified_gmt":"2022-07-01T17:19:04","slug":"legislation-statewide-issues","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/wabikes.org\/index.php\/growing-bicycling\/legislation-statewide-issues\/","title":{"rendered":"Legislation &#038; Statewide Issues"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Washington Bikes advocates for a bicycle-friendly state, works to increase funding for bicycle infrastructure and pass legislation to improve access and safety, coordinates with state agencies on the implementation of laws and regulations, provides tools for local advocates to improve their communities, and seeks to make bicycling accessible to everyone.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Endorsements.<\/strong> Following the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cascade.org\/about-history\/cascades-merger-washington-bikes\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2016 merger<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of Cascade Bicycle Club (becoming a 501(c)(3) organization) and Washington Bikes<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (emerging as a 501(c)(4) organization), Washington Bikes assumed all endorsements and electoral responsibilities for bicycling statewide.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Legislation<\/strong>. Washington Bikes works year-round for more funding, better policies, and new laws that grow bicycling and create safer and more complete streets statewide. Over the past 25 years, Washington Bikes has led efforts for the passage of the majority of bike-friendly legislation enacted into law. We accomplish this by:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Lobbying in Olympia<\/strong>. Washington Bikes has a statewide policy director who works with a contract lobbyist in Olympia to advance our legislative priorities. Staff and lobbyists serve as our eyes and ears, but <strong>members are our voice.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Involving You<\/strong>. You can help advocate for safer streets and greater bicycling accessibility by <a href=\"http:\/\/wabikes.org\/e-news-signup\/\">signing up on our email list<\/a>, joining our Lobby Day, and <a href=\"http:\/\/wabikes.org\/support-us\/donate\/\">donating to Washington Bikes<\/a><strong>.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><a name=\"test\"><\/a>Statewide Issues<\/strong>. Washington Bikes works to reach out to our advocates, our partners, and local governments and elected officials across the state. Through our <a href=\"https:\/\/p2a.co\/u7c6v14\">advocacy alert platform<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/WAbikes\">social media<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/wabikes.org\/blog-news\/\">blog<\/a>, we connect you to the latest issues and topics, help build capacity for better bicycle infrastructure, and seek to hear from you about legislative needs.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Speaking Up: How to Contact Your Legislators<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>For information and examples on contacting legislators about bills, see this Washington Bikes <a href=\"http:\/\/wabikes.org\/2013\/01\/30\/neighborhood-safe-streets-bill-second-gear-second-committee-hearing\/\">blog post<\/a>. It includes information on how to use the legislative district finder to identify your legislators and an example of the kind of message you can send in support of a bill.<\/p>\n<p>Don&#8217;t stop after the legislative session ends! Just a few of the actions you can take to keep support for bicycling visible year-round so it&#8217;s top of mind when they come back to Olympia:<\/p>\n<div>\n<ul>\n<li>Send your legislator a thank-you note at the end of session for their votes in support of bike projects.<\/li>\n<li>Invite your legislators on a bike ride to showcase infrastructure needs (and bring along a reporter or write a blog post for us with some photos).<\/li>\n<li>Write a letter to the editor of your local paper in support of a local project or bike master plan update. (Ask your friends to comment online to add their voice to yours. Ignore any trolls who may disagree with you&#8211;feeding them by responding just encourages them and they represent only a small minority.)<\/li>\n<li>Attend public meetings&#8211;your local bicycle advisory board if you have one, city council, county commissioners, board of your metropolitan planning organization or regional transportation planning organization, school board, planning commission&#8211;and ask them to adopt policies that support the expansion of access to bicycling.<\/li>\n<li>Share information about these meetings and bike events with your friends on your social media accounts;
